We Just Have To Give Ourselves A Chance!

"You can make startling changes you can’t even conceive of right now, if you just give yourself half a chance." -- Jim Rohn

As I was looking through some quote ideas another one from the great Jim Rohn jumped out at me.  I think so many times in our lives, if we give ourselves a chance to do great things, we will indeed do just that.

You know, before we are able to do really do anything in life we have to tell ourselves to do it.  Just getting up on time in the morning, making breakfast, filling the car up with gas, taking a shower, etc.  Now with other things, it’s a lot more difficult than simply telling ourselves to do it.  We have to convince ourselves for the really important and life changing things that we need to do.  Those items such as going after your dreams and goals, stepping up to push yourself to get rid of bad habits and replace them with good ones, to reach out to help others that maybe not too many others are willing to help out, along with looking to make a difference with others throughout your lifetime.

It’s about being continually inspired throughout life.  We need to have those inspirational reminders just about on a daily basis I think.  Those stories that we can relate to that helps us believe that we too can do great things.  To get us to understand that we don’t have to settle.   We simply need to give ourselves a chance, an opportunity to do them.  Jim Rohn went onto say “The real value in setting goals is not in their achievement. The acquisition of the things you want is strictly secondary. The major reason for setting goals is to compel you to become the person it takes to achieve them.”

When we look back on the great moments in our lives, they usually come from overcoming difficulties, maybe a long time in working hard and then something wonderful happens along with the fact that we can look back at all the great people that came into our lives along with the new things we learned during that time period.  It’s also a time to see the people that aren’t in our lives anymore.  Our journey throughout life takes us into different directions that others won’t follow us through.  They have their own journeys to go on and even though it’s sad to lose friends, it’s necessary for us to become who we want to and need to become.

Part of this equation is to figure it out sooner than later as some of our many journeys through life take time.  The sooner we realize this, the more things we can go through to get us to become the person we want to be.  Another key, maybe even a more important one is to realize that it’s never too late to start on any of these possible journeys.  You know, I’ve been learning a lot lately and much of it is dealing with the person that I know I need to become in order for things to happen.  Much of it are things that I’d rather not face, not talk about, and not have to go through.  I know I need to go through them and face them in order for things to get better for me but more importantly for those that are around me.  My wife and kids, my other family members, my students, my basketball players, fellow teachers, coaches, friends and neighbors along with the countless people that I haven’t even met yet.  I’ve been playing small most of my life.  That time has to end, and end now.  What are some of the things you need to give yourself permission to do?  Just give yourself a chance, something little, just one thing.  Then just look for those little things each and every day that can help you.  When you find them, please let me know and others too, since I know that we are all looking for those little things to help us in our journeys through life.

Be A Difference Maker For Others - Be The Light For Them!!

"There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." – Edith Wharton

It has occurred to me over the last few years that one of the best things each of us can do during our lifetime is to help and serve others.  I’ve also been reminded about that with one of my guest speakers that I’ve had speak to my Principles of Leadership classes the last three years.  That guest speaker happens to be a friend of mine along with being my current boss, Dr. Joe DiPonio.  He has told my students that one of the most honorable things we can spend our time doing, is to be of service to others.  I could not agree more.

He mentioned one of his mentors from his high school days was the best example of this and he was a huge difference maker in his life.  I have one of my mentors from my college days that had the same huge impact on me and my life and the lives of thousands of others.  His name was Dr. Wells Cook at Central Michigan University.

Looking back, I’ve always wanted to be that difference maker for my students.  But now it seems I have focused on ramping it up more with what Dr. Cook was all about.  He’s no longer with us as he passed from a battle with cancer just about 10 years ago already.  I think about him often and I look back to everything he did for me and I know it’s the least I can do in honor of him, is for me to get off my butt and start playing BIG in my life instead of playing small.  As I’ve mentioned before, playing small does nobody in the world any good at all.  It comes down to me looking to help more people than just my students.  Spreading the light for me means to invest in people and get them to believe in themselves, just like Dr. Cook did with me.

That is one of my many messages to my seniors this year, invest in others.  Believe in them.  Be the light for them to show them the great possibilities that they have in their life.  Be that difference no matter what you get into in life as you don’t have to be a teacher or a coach in order to make this happen.

So I know I need to continue to ramp up my efforts with my students, my wife and kids and the rest of my family.  I need to do this with my basketball coaching that I’ll be starting to get back in with the girls varsity at our local high school where my kids attended.  I will be trying to volunteer a little more with the other programs my kids were involved with there; the track & cross country programs along with the band program too.  I also need to play bigger with my blog, my podcasts, my videos, getting going on my first book, my coaching programs, continuing to improve with my teaching, more reading, the list is really endless where playing less small would benefit me and so many others.

Ask yourself this – where can I offer more light into other people’s lives?  Where and with who can I be a bigger difference maker?  Where else in my life can I play BIGGER, instead of playing small?  Let me know some of these answers as I would love to learn from you and help you too if I can.

Always Look To Learn - You Don't Know It All!

“Don't be too proud to take a lesson.  I'm not.” ~ Jack Nicklaus

As I sit here on my traditional Saturday morning with my coffee and getting some work done I was drawn to this thought from the great golfer Jack Nicklaus.  Now first of all, Mr. Nicklaus is not only a great golfer, in my opinion he’s an even great human being.  His love for people is very evident any time you listen to him along with his great respect for the game of golf.

To read and think about his point about him not being too proud to take a lesson, brings up the reminder for all of us.  He’s not really even talking about golf – he’s talking about life. He has been a life-long learner about life, about people, about business, and yes about golf too.

This also connected to me as I’ve been focusing on taking “lessons” recently.  My lessons have consisted from learning from others.  Recently Lauren Hill (college basketball player who had been diagnosed with brain cancer and went out and made A HUGE DIFFERENCE with sharing her message, raising over a million dollars for cancer research, etc. – well, she passed away this week).  I posted online about when I heard the news, I was moved to tears.  I just sat there for a few moments and cried when I heard the news and I remember crying when I first heard about her story.  It got me thinking about all that she was accomplishing while going through her battle with cancer, and here I am struggling at times doing what I have to do.  Her lesson of making a difference during her struggles has re-inspired me to do more of making a difference with others in my life, and doing it right now – not waiting anymore.

Sam Crowley of everydayissaturday.com has connected with me for years from his book, his podcasts, his message of hope and getting up off my butt to actually do something towards accomplishing my goals- he too has taught me many lessons.  His story of what him, his wife and his family have been going through with their daughter Susan – born at just 24 weeks and all the roller-coaster moments of all that they had to go through, and still are going through.

I got to spend some time with my parents recently going out to their house and spending the night.  Just sitting and talking with them, listening to them, sharing meals with them, etc., tons of lessons for me to learn from.  We spoke about my cousin Dave who recently passed away last fall – all the lessons from him and that experience.  I told my mom that I think about him often.  She said we all do.  I also drove through my old neighborhood.  All the great memories came flooding back to me. All the friends I grew up with. The heart-aches and the good times we had.  You know what – there were tons of lessons there too.  The lessons from my past that has affected my todays.  I try not to dwell on those memories, but I do use them to inspire me for today and my future.  I’ve heard it before and I’ll share it always; don’t ever forget where you came from.

When it comes down to it – be a learner, be a student.  Don’t you dare think that you don’t need to learn new things.  Don’t ever think that you know everything, that you have arrived, that you don’t need others to help you, we all need others in our lives.  So as the sun comes through my doorwall here, I am reminded that today is a new beginning where I will learn new things and new lessons. It’s up to me to apply those lessons to get better and do more.  What will you do with the lessons you get to learn from today?

Is The Glass Half Full or Half Empty? There's More To This Story - Quote Of The Week!

"The contents of the glass don’t matter; what’s more important is to realize there’s a pitcher of water nearby. In other words, we have the capacity to refill the glass, or to change our outlook." -- Shawn Achor

Anybody thirsty?  There is nothing like having a full glass of cold water to quench our thirst when we find ourselves really thirsty on a hot sunny day.  It is such a relief, an energizer, a re-focusing moment where we can feel better after we drink it.

There is also the question with this glass of how we view life.  Is the glass half empty or half full in our outlook in life?  Most of us know people where we can see how they view their glass of water just by their actions and words.

The key from this thought that Shawn leaves with us is that it doesn’t matter what the content are in the glass, nor does it matter at what level it is in the glass.  The important point is that we have to recognize there is a pitcher nearby that we can choose to grab and fill up the glass again and again and again!

That will take effort and thought on our part of course and that’s another piece of the puzzle that many people don’t want to do.  Some would rather other people or the government; fill up their glass rather doing it themselves.

If we take care of it ourselves, we get to choose what we pour into our glass.  Is it going to be water or will it be some other substance?  Will it be things that energize, help us to re-focus, grow stronger, etc.?  Will it be things that make us weaker, un-focused and distracted and even make us sick?  This connects with the fact that we have a choice as to what comes into ourselves and into our life that we want for ourselves.

We all can start to build a more positive outlook by asking ourselves these questions:  How can I reach out and better connect with my co-workers, neighbors, family or friends?  What are some ways my actions make a difference to the world?  What am I proud of accomplishing today?

You can start off the week thinking about these things and I bet by the end of the week, you will be able to look back on some very positive moments.  You can share some thoughts and help not only yourself but others too.

In Life There Are Plenty Of Choices... Make The Right One When You Are Looking Ahead To Your Future - Quote of the Week!

10/13/2014

"There's always something to suggest that you'll never be who you wanted to be. Your choice is to take it or keep on moving." -- Phylicia Rashad

We face choices every day in our lives.  We can make choices that take us closer to where we want to go, or we can make choices that will take us further away from our goals and dreams.  It’s up to us.  Along with the fact that we don't usually have all the time in the world to make these choices either.

There are also plenty of things in life and people too for that matter that will get in the way of those choices.  Not only will they get in the way, they will also make us believe that maybe we can’t do what we set out to do.  We all know people that are what’s called “dream suckers”.  They just suck the life out of any dream that we might have and make us feel like we can do it or even worse, it’s stupid for us to even try.

There are two major things we can do to help ourselves with this issue.  One is to have such a large dream, something that we are so fired up and passionate about,  that makes it nearly impossible for anything or anyone to get in the way of us making it happen.  The second thing is for us to identify those obstacles or brick walls (both things and people) and for us to work hard at avoiding them and choosing not to allow them to affect our efforts.

The main reason this caught my eye this week were the events that me and my family went through last week and are continuing to go through this week.  We had a family funeral to attend as my cousin Dave passed away suddenly last week.  To see the tons of people that turned out at the family get-together at their home along with the funeral service the next day – it was totally amazing.  To hear all the stories about how he affected so many people was awesome and inspiring too.

My cousin chose to keep moving to chase his goals and dreams.  He didn’t let any of those brick walls stop him at all, in face he used them to inspire himself to stick to his plan.  One of the many thoughts that struck me was that from all the different people he affected and helped during his lifetime, he helped them by going after his goals and dreams.  He went after being a professor at a university, and he did that and more.  He wrote a book in his field that is referenced so many times around the world.  His studies and projects that he worked on were leading to new ways of thinking and lead others to new discoveries too.  He loved sports, especially soccer and basketball.  His coaching encouraged so many kids to stick with the game and getting better along with battling through their fears.  Huge life lessons!

You see, by going after our goals and dreams we can help many more people along the way than if we don’t go after them.  In fact we will hold others back from attaining their goals and dreams by not going after ours.  That was a huge lesson my cousin left for others. I for one took notice.  How about you?  Any of these thoughts connect with you?  Are there people out there that are an example for you?  Always looking to learn – share your thoughts so that you can help others too.

Great Story - A Difference Maker

My principal, Dr. Joe DiPonio, Brother Rice High School grad - came in to talk to my Leadership classes last week. He brought with him a card that Mr. Popson - a teacher, athletic director at Brother Rice - gave to him when he graduated. That card had a poem about "Your thoughts will determine your destiny..." He told stories of how Mr. Popson changed his life with the lessons he taught him. Dr. D reads that card almost everyday - the lessons keep coming for him. BIG CONNECTION!! I went to Catholic Central High School - arch rivals of Brother Rice - one of my good friends growing up in high school and college was Mr. Popson's son, Matthew Popson we worked at K-Mart together back in the day. The times I went to Matt's house - his dad was everything Dr. Joe said - he was a great man that affected so many lives. He had this positive force around him-caring for others, a life full of character and integrity.

Here is Dr. D and I after his speech with the card that he carries with him everyday. I posed this question to my students... who is a Mr. Popson for you? Make sure you thank them... and do it soon. Then - even more important I think. ... throughout your lifetime, who can you be a Mr. Popson for out there. Look to be a difference maker out there for others. What you do for others can last a lifetime.

Here is a great response that I got from my friend Matt Popson:

"Thanks John Daly for your great story and tribute to my father. Also thank you Dr. D for sharing your personal experience with what my father meant to you and his influence on your life. My family was fortunate to have such an amazing father, teacher, coach and true Christian in our everyday lives...we shared him proudly with all who knew him because he was all these things to every person who was fortunate to get to know my father...he's one in a million and thank God I got to call him my Dad!!! Everyone who knows my father has a story of some kind and in some way touched all of our lives and thank you for making us all what we are today...thanks again Dad and I love and miss you!!! Thank you John for keeping his spirit alive in another generation of students!!!"

“There is no passion to be found playing small-in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” –  Nelson Mandela

This quote's main idea about not playing small in life, I've spoken about before.  It serves nobody when we play small in life.  When we choose to not be the best we can be, not living our life the best that we can; we really are hurting ourselves obviously but we are also affecting others around us too.

This past week the world lost one of the biggest difference makers that mankind has ever seen.  When I saw this quote from Nelson Mandela, it struck me as one that I had to use this week.  Here was a man who not only made it through some of the harshest times anyone has ever survived (being in prison for 27 years), but then came out not angry or bitter, but he came out more inspired to change things for the better.  It makes me wonder how each of us can work to make positive changes in our lives and in the lives of others, without being in prison.  But if we think about it, maybe some (or most) of us are already in "prison".

Nelson Mandela also answered a question after he got out of prison - the question wondered why he was not angry and bitter at his captors. He said (and I'm paraphrasing here) if he chose to be that way - than he would have been in a far worse prison the rest of his life.  It totally makes sense to me.  Our choices and how we respond to things along with the way we think, can literally put us in our own "prison" which keeps us from doing great things in our life.  It forces us to play small in life.  Nelson Mandela lived 95 years, 27 of those were in a physical prison under harsh conditions.  How many of us lives in a different type of prison and how many years has that forced us to play small in life?  Looking back, I've been stuck there for too many of my 47 years, that's for sure. As I sit here with my cup of coffee thinking about the meanings behind Mr. Mandela's words - I have figured out that we all hold the key to open up the door to our prison and walk out so we can start playing BIG in life so we can make a difference in our life and more importantly, in the lives of others.

It would be great to hear some thoughts and ideas - especially from younger people that may have not really known what Nelson Mandela was all about.  Maybe over the last few days since his death, it's made you want to find out more about the man and what he was about.  As always - let me and others know your thoughts and your ideas.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Short one this week due to final exams going on.  I actually got this from one of my students' blog posts.  It really hit me as to how right on Ralph was.  I have heard a few times that the most important two days in a person's life is the day they are born and the day they figure out what they were meant to do with their life.  Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us that it's up to us.  I'm here to help you to understand that this process is a huge journey that takes most of your life.

Sometimes we figure out what we were meant to do early - but then it still could take a lot of time to get it going and figure out how to make it happen.  That's where I am now.  I've figured out about making a difference with people; mainly young adults, athletes, teachers, coaches, parents, etc.  Now I'm on the part of the journey to make that happen.

What part of your journey are you on?  It's easy to figure out - as one of the two important days has already happened for us. :-)

“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” – Dale Carnegie

This is one of those things that I think most people always are looking for in their lives - finding something to have fun with, be passionate about - and be lucky enough to be doing it for a living. Success comes in so many different forms, but the foundation comes from this statement from Mr. Carnegie, is one of the many things that the sooner we understand it, the better off we are.

For me, teaching is fun.  Working with my students, getting to know them, making a difference with them, helping them see the many possibilities for them and their futures; that's what it's all about.  But now since I've been in education for 24 years, I am looking to make some changes to find other things that will challenge me, make me a better person, help me grow and help me to do more in this limited lifetime that we all get.  No, I'm not leaving the classroom.  Yet.  I do see some different things for me on the horizon - teaching & coaching will always be part of who I am, what I'm about and what I do.  Since I'm still enjoying these things, I know that I am going to continue doing them.  I also know that there are other things out there, dreams that I have had and not yet done much about.  It's time.

What is it for you?  For the adults out there, do you have fun and enjoy what you spend most of your time doing?  Take a few moments to do some homework for yourself - and stop and think about how your life is going, what direction you are going, what are those things inside of you that fire you up?  We all have dreams and ideas of what we would love to do - why not start to try and make some of those things happen?  What could you have fun at and still make a living?  Or, do you have enough spare time to do those things in your life, that help make it worthwhile to keep doing what you are doing?

Another main point here - life is way too short to do things you hate all the time.  It does us no good at all.   The stress and worry alone affects everything in our lives.  Our health, our relationships with others, our attitudes, etc.  For the younger people out there - great lessons here.  I tell my students all the time.  Find things that fire you up.  Find things that when you wake up in the morning, you can't wait to get started on.  While you are young and in high school (or even before high school), read, talk to people, have your minds open to the many possibilities that are out there; and start identifying things that you enjoy and see how you can get paid to do them.

I am always interested in feedback - but this one would be unique to hear some thoughts and ideas on both sides.  Do you have dreams that you are going after?  Or, do you have dreams and you have felt that there is no use even trying anymore for them.  (remember the discussion points on the grave yard being the most valuable pieces of real estate in the world) Those that hate your job, what do you hate about it? What would you change to make it better?  Let me know - I enjoy learning from others, getting help from others and helping others too!

"Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently." -Henry Ford

There was a little bit of a connection to this being a Monday and this wonderful quote from Henry Ford.  When I saw it this morning I thought about the fact that I needed to reset and begin a few things again today, being the start of another week.  This week is crucial leading up to the new school year and there are plenty of things I need to work on in a more intelligent way than I've done before.

This holds true with work things that we have to do, but more importantly it also has to do with life things too.  The sooner we look at the difficulties in our lives, how did we arrive there, what things can we learn from those experiences, how can I make changes so it doesn't happen again; are just some of the things we need to think about.  This of course is all wieved arround the fact that we can't let our own negative thinking get in the way of learning from our failures.

One thought I had when I read this over a few times this morning, was that all the things I've failed at throughout my life, I must not have learned much since some of the things I'm still struggling with.  From there it might be a thought like, 'what makes you think this time will be any different?'   Another one; 'who are you kidding, you know you'll end up right where you started as you have tried this so many times.'

A funny thing though.  As I started running the usual negative thoughts in my head there was a little response, just a little voice that said - hey, this time can be different.  It also said that 'you know you can do this', along with little pictures in my mind about me being successful and actually doing these things that I'm working on doing.  The key is that over time (and for me it's been a long journey) I have learned little bits and pieces even if I wasn't successful at accomplishing things that I wanted to do, I still got just a tiny bit better than I was before.

There is the key!  As long as you come coming back, struggle, try and do more, try and get better, keep trying to accomplish things in your life; this quote from Henry Ford will continue to hold truth for you.  This is why it's important to continue to read and listen to things more than once.  In fact it should be many times - some experts even say almost 20 times we need to read or listen to something for it really to become a habit, or it gets placed inside of us that we can draw on it any time we need it.  What is it for you? What does Mr. Ford's quote mean to you?  How do you connect to it?  As always I invite you to share with me and others your thoughts and ideas about this quote, for there will be many other ideas and thoughts that can help me and others.  It's always great to see someone's thoughts and opinions that can get us thinking differently.  Seeing things from different points of view are always helpful.
