We All Have To Have Confidence and Hope In Our Lives

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." - Helen Keller

As I sit here with my (you guessed it) first cup of coffee, I’m listening to the rain and I’m thinking about many things.  Most of the things I’m thinking about  (my wife and family, my basketball coaches and players that I’m blessed to be working with, what I’m calling “the summer of change”, the books I want to read, and how thankful I am for this cup of coffee among many other things), I get a very contagious feeling of hope and peacefulness.

I’ve always tried to have an optimistic attitude or outlook in my life.  There are many times where this is difficult and challenging, but I always strive to get back to having this type of outlook.  I do know for sure that Helen Keller was correct in that things cannot be accomplished without hope and confidence.  At least anything that matters.

Having an optimistic attitude or outlook in life is a lot easier for us when we are doing things that are connected to our heart and have passion for.  It also connects with the people that we have in our lives as we need others to help encourage us, love us where we are at, support us, listen to us along with us doing the same for them.  This helps instill faith in ourselves that we can achieve things we want to do.   If we don’t have all these pieces to the puzzle, things get a little bit more difficult and that at times will lead to not having hope or confidence in ourselves and in our situations that we live in.

This comes back to the start, the foundation that we have to have to work on setting the table so to speak, for ourselves to have this optimism in our lives.  We have to reach down inside of ourselves and find out what are the things that light us on fire!  What are the things that we get fired up and make us want to go after certain things in life?  We need to be conscious of the thoughts, information and ideas coming into our minds along with finding and keeping those people in our lives that help us and that we are able to help too.

Start today by looking at this quote and figure out what feeds into this optimism in our lives.  Then look at what are the things in your heart that you know you want to accomplish and go after.  Is what you do, day in and day out, helping you have more hope and confidence in your life?  Or are those things pointing to not having hope and no confidence in your life?  Figure out just one change today that you can make to start feeling better about things.  Then keep working on that one thing as you identify one other thing, then another, and another and so on.  Just keep working on one thing and keep it going as those will lead to other things to work on and improve and then just watch the changes that start to happen.

What’s one thing for you to start on right now?  One thing for me – to start reading more books, more articles, etc.  Another quick one for me is to put more action into my days of doing the things that I have to do to make things happen.  Anything that can help make me better, I have to do.  Share yours as I bet it might help someone else out too.

Don't Play Small In Life - There Needs To Be Passion!

"There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." - Nelson Mandela

I’ve been hearing this message a few times recently from a couple of different pod-casts that I listen to along with some Leadership presentations in my classes.   Now understand, I’ve heard this message many times before but for some reason it has stuck out more to me recently probably because I’ve been playing too small lately.  I’m seeing that fact now that I’m also working towards expanding my comfort zone too, because that’s what I know I have to do in order to make the changes necessary for me doing the things I have to get done.  My age also has something to do with it – as I’m now 49 and there are things that are becoming clearer to me that I want to work on and get involved in.

One of them is to get back to coaching girls basketball at the high school level.  Now of course I have a couple of options here as to where I could do this and I hope to have it finalized soon.  I’ve been involved with coaching mainly girls basketball since around 1982.  I got my start with coaching with my dad in our CYO league coaching middle school girls basketball.  So on top of coaching, I’ve also been involved with doing stats, broadcasting games on our local cable channel for our girls Varsity games the last few years.  So counting those years, I’ve been around the great game of basketball for around 30 years.  There is passion there as I love the game and I really enjoy promoting the girls that play that great sport.

I’ve finally moved ahead with my podcasts and keeping my blogs going too.  I’ve been playing small in those areas for too long now.  I know two of my friends and mentors probably have been scratching their heads as to how much longer I would go, in not working harder and doing more in these areas.  One key element about those 2 mentors of mine, they never gave up on me. They’ve always been encouraging me over the years along with always letting me know that they are there for me too – it’s just up to me to get going with the things we have always talked about.

I’m trying to do other things too, much bigger than what I have been doing in the past.  I’m looking forward to this summer with some of the many things I want to get done, I’m looking forward to having the time and hopefully the drive and focus to get things done.  I have had many items on my “to-do” list from many years ago that just simply don’t get done, heck they don’t even get started most years.

Time to be different.  Time for different results.  Time to live big.  What will it be for you?

Everyone should take this class, "Philosophy of YOU!" Quote of the week....

"Don't borrow someone else's plan. Develop your own philosophy and it will lead you to unique places." -- Jim Rohn

Jim brings up a great idea when I saw this quote from him.  We all should take a course in the Philosophy of ourselves. The great thing about it is that it won't cost us hundreds of dollars per credit hour that we have to pay to a university. It will cost us some time and maybe a little money in trying to create the course for ourselves, but in the end it will be worth it.

No matter what stage you are at in your life, this development of your own philosophy is important enough to get started on as soon as you can.  Of course like many of my postings, it does hold true for this one too: the sooner you get going on this, the better your life could be.  There is another point here too, and that is we cannot follow someone else's plan.  We have to come up with our own blueprint of our own lives.  Now that's not to say that we should not take others' thoughts and opinions into developing our own plan, but for the final decisions, it does come down to ourselves creating our own plan for our life.

As I constantly try and get my students to realize they have to follow their own goals and dreams instead of doing things to please others.  I not only find myself needing that advice still at my age but now I also am trying to pass that advice onto my two kids as well.  My son will be 21 later this year and my daughter just turned 18 and graduated from high school.  I am always looking for suggestions as possible careers for them to look into - with what I think connects to them as the person each of them are starting to become.  I am for sure promoting to both of them to explore, ask questions, meet people and look deep inside of themselves to find out what drives them.  What do they get fired up about? What excites them? What do they stay up late working on? Along with, what gets them out of bed in the morning so they can get going on things right away?  The key for all of us, is to look at these questions for ourselves.  Remember, it's never too late to get going chasing after our own dreams, goals and passions.

What do we need to find some of these things out for ourselves?  For one thing, we need to spend some time to actually think about some of these things that make up our plan.  We need to write them down too, so we can read, plan, make goals, think some more on them and let the ideas come flowing out to help us get going.  We need to also change our thinking.  The most valuable tool we have is our own brains.  The 5 or 6 inches between our ears should be guarded very tightly with what we allow into it.  Look to make some changes in our thinking, what we read, watch and listen to.  Another point is watching out who we hang out with.  Those people that we let affect us are vitally important as to who we become and what plan we are working from too.  Finally, our habits are key.  This involves how we spend our valuable time and what are we accomplishing with it.  Spending our time involves action - we are doing something with our time, but we need to look at how that is actually getting us closer or farther away from our drams and goals.  This one is a biggie for me as I struggle with it often.  Something once again that I find myself dealing with this summer.  I look forward to making some serious strides to improving my habits and how I spend my time.

What about you?  Anything here ring true for you too?  Always look to reflect on these and other things that can bring you closer to going after your dreams and goals.   Find some time this week to do just that.   Let me know how it's coming and maybe even get in touch and let me know how I can help you out along with you probably being able to help me out too.

Important things in life are supposed to be hard... Quote of the Week!

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great." -- Tom Hanks (A League of Their Own)

First of all, what a great movie!  Manager Jimmy Dugan played by Tom Hanks, does such a great job in this movie along with all the other stars.  One of his many quotes that connect with people is when he is responding to the character Dottie - (played by Gina Davis) and she's leaving the team to go back to Oregon with her husband who just got home from fighting in WWII.  She tells him that it just got too hard.  He responded with "it's supposed to be hard.  It it wasn't hard, everyone would do it.  The hard is what makes it great!"

At the time in the movie - he was talking about the game of baseball.  So was she - but it also took on the hint of being too hard as it related to her life too.  Her sister Kit just got traded to another team who they would be facing in the World Series soon.  Her husband Bob got wounded and got discharged from the army a little after a teammate of hers lost her husband in the war.  As the movie went on, Dottie left but she came back later in the series to play for her team.

Many lessons here - we all need to work harder in life to find the passions that we have to help make it easier to do things in life.  Things that are worth it and mean a lot to us, are usually things that will take great effort and lot's of time on our part in order to make them happen.  Life does indeed get hard..we can make it easier on ourselves when we are chasing after dreams and goals that mean so much to us and means a lot to those that we love and care about too.

Sports are great connecting pieces to life's puzzle... so many teachable moments... in fact anything that has to be learned along with the fact that everyone isn't able to do it.. .(music, art, singing, dancing, etc.) That's why this and many lessons are found in so many types of performances.  Remember to focus on a few things that you connect with and realize that it won't be easy, and that's why not everyone does it.  Also, remember it's worth it - that's one of the things that makes it great.

"The results you achieve will be in direct proportion to the effort you apply." - Denis Waitley

Effort sure doesn't go wasted - especially when it's the right effort going towards something meaningful in our lives.  This quote got me thinking with our seniors finishing up their high school career soon along with the fact that this fits for anyone in life regardless of their age.

This quote does cover a lot - the effort needed to cook a good meal, the effort our jobs take to do them well, and of course relationships too all things in life take effort and the more important or valuable those things are, it seems the more effort it takes.  Always remember anything worthwhile, usually is hard.

This is just another reason in a long list of things, on why it's so important to find those things that you have passion for in life.  It is so much easier to work hard on those things compared to things you don't like.

What are you putting your efforts into? The effort you put into things in life are directly tied into the results you get.  Our seniors will be much better off learning this lesson now compared to later life.  Any thoughts about this for them and for the rest of us too?

"Don't watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going." -- Sam Levenson

After dealing with a bit of stomach flu the last few days, I am feeling a little better so I figured I'd get some thoughts out as to this week's quote.  I got a little help from a few of my students too while I was home sick - so thank you Meranda, Mitchell, and Amber.

There are plenty of times that I think we are all a clock watcher.  As a teacher, there are plenty of times I am watching the clock to start a period, to end a period and many times, to end the school day.  I know students are the same way too.  This quote from Sam mentions for us to do like the clock does - to keep going.  Whether this is during a class period, a work project that has to get done, studying, grading papers, helping a family member out, reading a book, watching t.v., working out, etc.  There are plenty of times during every day where we have to tell ourselves to keep going.  When things are fun and easy, we don't have to really focus on the "keep going" part. It's when things are difficult or not enjoyable is where we have to remind ourselves to "keep going".

My students that helped me with this thought noticed a couple of things.  There is such little time in life that we need to spend our time doing things that matter most to us and that are important. I have really seen that recently as I've gotten older along with hearing from graduates as they get older too.  Doing things that matter and that are important, not worrying about the time it takes – just keep going, the time will go by anyway – finish it to the end.

When I was home sick yesterday from school - I had a few minutes to sit in our family room to rest a little bit.  As I did this, I noticed our two clocks ticking.  One is in the kitchen and the other  is in our family room.  It got me thinking about how the clock and really time, just keeps going.  It doesn't wait.  It doesn't stop.  It just keeps going.  Looking around at our family pictures around our house - I started tearing up as to how much time has actually gone by with me and my family.  (tearing up again as I write this).  As I recently celebrated my 48th birthday - this concept has really hit home.

This is another in the many reasons, the long list of reasons why in life, we really have to ask ourselves - what is my life all about?  What does it mean for me to be here? Am I spending the time I have doing what I really want to do, what I really need to do?  The more we realize that we need to continue to learn and grow, to continue chasing after the dreams that are inside of us, going after the passions that get us fired up - that my friends, is time well spent.  As I have told my students over and over through the years, the sooner they realize this the better off their lives will be.  Funny thing is - this message is for me and others  too.  It doesn't matter that I'm 48. What matters is that I start now, today, in going after those things in my life.

Any other thoughts that you are thinking about that help you out?  You know, it might help others out too.  Let me know what your thoughts and ideas are.  Quick!  What time is it?  I just looked at the clock of course - my thought is to keep going on what I have to do and not get distracted. What did you think about?

“Whatever you do in life, it should energize you not drain you” – Scott Smith

When I saw this quote - I knew I had to get it out there for my students and others to really wrap their arms around this one.  It's a common theme with my students about finding things they are passionate about to chase after in their lives.  I've seen it for far too long now with people that don't have much in life that get's them fired up.  Many people spend their times doing things every day that seems to drain them and sends them off into a negative state of mind.  Of course it doesn't just affect them - it affects (or infects) many people that come in contact with them.

We only have a limited time here on earth - so why spend it doing things that drain you and make you feel horrible about yourself and everyone around you.  It's time (no matter how old you are) to start figuring out what you have to do to find those things to chase after that inspire you. Those things that are in your heart that get you fired up.  Those things that are on your mind that wake you up in the middle of the night thinking about.  We all have things that fall into those categories and at least at one time or another - we have all thought about something like this.  Figure this out, the sooner the better.  I keep telling my students that they have such an advantage over most of the people in our society.  If they start looking now and trying to figure out those things that they are fired up about - they can start doing something about those things.  Most people never go after what truly gets them fired up in life.    They get sucked into doing things that don't inspire and energize - and they lose hope of ever finding those true passions in life.

This thought also works with people.  We should surround ourselves with those people that inspire us, those that make us feel better about ourselves, those people that add value to our lives - not those that drain us, make us feel horrible about ourselves and those that keep on taking without giving back.

Where are you on the path to finding out about these ideas?  Hopefully this gets you thinking about a few things that you can start looking at differently today.  Drop me a note and let me know what you think - you could help me and others too.

"Don't give me easy. Give me is it worth it."  - Sam Crowley

The further we get in life, the more we look for our passions in life.  Or at least that is the way I see it.   It really becomes so important to see how fast time is passing and to look around a little bit to figure out what your passion is - a key to life for sure. Sam Crowley is someone who has a fantastic book and a great podcast along with other things for years, who's main message is to follow your life's passion and not to settle for mediocrity.  It's a great message and I encourage you to check him out, along with others who's message is to inspire and to get you going in finding what your passion is in life.

Another key that I try and get my students to realize that it can be really cool to figure out what that passion (or passions) is early in life.  The sooner the better.  That means that we can't be clueless... we need to have a clue in life.  We need to be on the lookout for what motivates us, what drives us, what gets us fired up, what is it that gets  you out of bed (many times before your alarm goes off), what is that you just have to do more of since it's always on your mind???

When I say the sooner the better - that really hit home last week as one of my son's friends was sadly killed in a snowmobile accident.  A couple of weeks away from his 19th birthday.  This kid connected with so many people, of all age groups, including me.  Eric was someone who had tons of passion in life about people and other things that was a fantastic lesson for me and I think others, judging as to how many people I saw at the funeral home and at his funeral mass the next day.  It brought the sad reminder about we don't know how much time we have.  It drives home the point that we can't waste time in our lives.  The time is NOW to start going after things that you have passion for.  We have all had an "Eric" to give us those lessons my friends. But the cost is entirely up to us.  Do we want to wait and watch more time fly by?  I have figured out.. no... not me any more.  With my 48th birthday coming up this month - no thanks, I can't wait anymore.  Do I wish I started earlier?  You better believe it.  Could I have started earlier... I guess looking back, I did start earlier. It just took me awhile to continue it on and start to do more things to make these things happen for me.  I have a kid who loved the color yellow, who loved life and the people in his life, and loved Dr. Pepper pop (which I do too... always as a kid and I've reminded myself of that lately) that gave me another lesson in my life.  God Bless him!

So the things that seem to be hard in life - don't wish that things were easier.  Ask yourself is it worth it?  Then look for ways to make to make it happen.  The great things in life - the ones that touch our hearts and our soul - are usually not easy.  As Tom Hanks said in the movie "A League of Their Own" about baseball - "The hard is what makes it great."  Look to see what drives you, find that passion and then ask yourself - is it worth it?  I think you might know that answer is.  I know I do.  Any thoughts or ideas to share?  Let me know!!

“Without enthusiasm you are doomed to a life of mediocrity, but with it you can accomplish miracles." - Og Mandino

This is one of the most important keys to success.  Og Mandino has it connected so well to a successful and meaningful life.  As I read this quote this morning, sitting at home (from a snow day off of work) with a copy of my "Eight O-Clock" brand coffee, it got me thinking as to how fired up I get towards things that I'm doing in my life.  Teaching and Coaching - things that have gotten me to where I am today along with where it's taking me in my future too.

Looking back however, I did not really take the view of what I was doing.  I always knew I enjoyed what I was doing, but now I can attach that word and idea of being enthusiastic (or what I call - being fired up) over what I do.  Let me tell you - what a difference it has made for me.  With all the things going on in the world, especially in the field of education, if I wasn't "fired up" over my job I might be doing something else today.

That enthusiasm has translated in to helping me become re-energized not only about my career, but my future as well.  I've been having these ideas that I would like to do in my life.  I call dreams I guess.  Since I've been awaken to the fact that I am enthused about my career - it has translated into me getting fired up about a whole bunch of things in my life, including those dreams I've had.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated ever so well:  "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm".  Take a few moments as the new year gets started to see what gets you "fired up".  Then start figure out how to do those things.  Always looking for help - I know many of you are better at this concept than I am.  I can use all the help I can get and I'm hoping I can help a few of you out too.  Let me know.

“There is no passion to be found playing small-in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” –  Nelson Mandela

This quote's main idea about not playing small in life, I've spoken about before.  It serves nobody when we play small in life.  When we choose to not be the best we can be, not living our life the best that we can; we really are hurting ourselves obviously but we are also affecting others around us too.

This past week the world lost one of the biggest difference makers that mankind has ever seen.  When I saw this quote from Nelson Mandela, it struck me as one that I had to use this week.  Here was a man who not only made it through some of the harshest times anyone has ever survived (being in prison for 27 years), but then came out not angry or bitter, but he came out more inspired to change things for the better.  It makes me wonder how each of us can work to make positive changes in our lives and in the lives of others, without being in prison.  But if we think about it, maybe some (or most) of us are already in "prison".

Nelson Mandela also answered a question after he got out of prison - the question wondered why he was not angry and bitter at his captors. He said (and I'm paraphrasing here) if he chose to be that way - than he would have been in a far worse prison the rest of his life.  It totally makes sense to me.  Our choices and how we respond to things along with the way we think, can literally put us in our own "prison" which keeps us from doing great things in our life.  It forces us to play small in life.  Nelson Mandela lived 95 years, 27 of those were in a physical prison under harsh conditions.  How many of us lives in a different type of prison and how many years has that forced us to play small in life?  Looking back, I've been stuck there for too many of my 47 years, that's for sure. As I sit here with my cup of coffee thinking about the meanings behind Mr. Mandela's words - I have figured out that we all hold the key to open up the door to our prison and walk out so we can start playing BIG in life so we can make a difference in our life and more importantly, in the lives of others.

It would be great to hear some thoughts and ideas - especially from younger people that may have not really known what Nelson Mandela was all about.  Maybe over the last few days since his death, it's made you want to find out more about the man and what he was about.  As always - let me and others know your thoughts and your ideas.
