LOOK FOR SOME CHANGES COMING SOON!!
Here we are - hard to believe that March is almost half over with 2018 is off and running! Looking at my calendar - school is moving right along as we have a few days off for our holiday break after a positive start to our Winter trimester. Daily examples on TIME waiting for nobody. That is why I'm really focusing more on getting things done that I have wanted to do for years.
One of those things is for me is to keep going with my podcasts - Find them on ITunes, Sticher & Google Play -Search for "Coach To Expect Success" with my name. Around 3800 downloads just blows my mind. I'm very humbled and grateful for the support from the people - from all around the world - that have been following this new journey for me.
Our basketball season is upon us and we are trying to build from last year's team making it to the Quarterfinals of the Michigan High School state tournament - we finished with a 19-7 record. District and Regional Champions - a very good year. But as we all know - we can't rest on our accomplishments of our past - we have a lot of work to do to continue this great journey for this amazing program. I am looking forward to this season continuing as we have finished our league part of our schedule - we tied for the Red Division Title and we are in the middle of the MAC Tournament playoffs. Currently we are 14-3 and we are looking for our first tournament title later this week we hope. We need to find the many ways to get better, both for me as a coach and hopefully as a team too. We can look back with pride but we will have mostly a different team and we have to get to work with this new team and it all starts this summer. I have a lot of work to do in that area to help our program continue to get better. I need to get back on track with my Leadership program with our team -looking forward to some great results.
I hope things are going well for you and I hope you are continuing in a great direction for whatever you want to do. Always remember to stop, take a breath and reflect on everything good that you have going on in your life. There are many puzzle pieces to everyone's puzzle of success for their own lives. I've figured out that I enjoy helping people find those pieces as I'm continuously looking for the pieces to my puzzle of success.
It's been crazy with a lot of things going on lately - but it is a good thing when the things that you are spending your time on are great to be working on because it means making a difference with others. One of the big crazy thing that happened is that my wife and I finally crossed the #1 item off her bucket list - we took a trip to Paris, France this past June. So many great things we saw, met some awesome people there too and it was great to just spend time together, just the two of us. We have talked a lot about not waiting so long to go after other items on our bucket lists of things we want to do.
Lots of changes all around us - things will be interesting here in the coming months. Our dog continues to be a HUGE part of our family, bringing love, energy, excitement and laughter to all of us. It sure is easier to have our family of 4 all around helping with him and he really loves the fact that he has so many people in his family that are around every day. I'm looking forward to seeing him every day - our whole family does.
Remember - we all need to focus a little bit more on the things that we have to do in life. Us CHOOSING to grow and get better is optional. We need to focus on today - since that is really all we have to work with. (this has been on my mind a lot lately) I hope you are on your continuous journey to keep looking to do those things in life that fire you up and give you the chance to get better, along with getting you excited to go out and do what you have to do.
The key for all of us is how we spend our time now and into the remaining parts of this day, this week, the coming months and the year. For me, lots of distractions that have happened over the last couple of months, weeks and days both at home & school. School has had construction, new technology, a new room for me, etc. There will be more in the future, that's for sure. That is what life is all about, handling things that come our way. I'm glad to have hung in there with the latest distractions. Some good of course, but I always knew I had to get back to sharing information that can help others out in their journey. It's about time I do what I know I was meant to do!! Putting things off has got to stop in my life. It's not been easy as I'm fighting my phlegmatic personality (letting distractions hold me back in my comfort zones). Something I'm working on for sure.
Since I have started my 25th year at Lake Shore High School along with my 29th year in education, I am still amazed as to how fast time has gone by and I realize that time is running out for me to do things that I want to (and need to) do. Please understand, that time will go by fast for you too - especially if you are doing something that is in your heart as teaching & coaching is in mine. Time for some possible changes coming up for me - what about you?
What are somethings that you need to work on?? I have been continuing with my workouts at the gym - even though those distractions have majorly gotten in the way in the past, I am getting back to more of a needed routine. I hope to continue getting my exercise and making it a priority in my life. I've made the decision to get an advanced membership at the gym so I can have more options as to the different locations I can work out at. It will help me stay committed to my workouts and thereby making it a little easier to try and get healthy. It's part of a long list of good habits I need to keep working on. I hope my upcoming doctor appointments show some of the progress I hope I am making. :-) I need to keep looking to get better and maybe make some career changes too???
Looking back to my time of healing and reflection this past three years or so, when I was home after my knee and back surgeries, I figured out why I do enjoy being a teacher so much. That time I was away from school, I really missed working with my students and being around my co-workers everyday. I put a quick video together on why I like teaching. It was in response to a posting from a friend and former colleague - look for it here on my site. I wanted to come back to my job with a renewed excitement and energy - and that is exactly what happened and it is still happening as I am getting more and more fired up for the start of school coming up soon. I have been renewed and re-focused on doing some things in my life thanks to my time of healing last year and this summer too. It's also due to the help of many people that are in and around my life. Now the key for me is to start doing those things, which I am currently doing.
Remember, we always need to have to find some time to relax, reflect and spend time with those that we care about. Keep looking to do your "homework" and reflect on areas you want to improve. Hopefully the upcoming fall weather will offer some time to unplug and to refocus in our lives. So check out my book list below - lot's of great titles to read about and maybe start thinking differently. Thinking of starting an online book club soon?? Stay tuned for more... :-)
I have also been around girls basketball for more than 35 years too as a coach, doing stats, and even a little broadcasting. I am getting ready to start up my second season coaching as an assistant coach on the Varsity Girls Basketball team at Dakota High School. I'm busy working on more Leadership lessons for our program, new drills, workout schedules & ideas, new plays, along with improving as an assistant coach to help the coaching staff, the players and the entire program with having a great year. I'm so FIRED UP for our season starting up.
One thing that has hit me over the years is our need to have more success & leadership principles in our lives. Over the last 20 or more years or so, I have begun to implement some of these principles into my life, my teaching and coaching - and the results are continuing to appear. Whatever your passion or profession, no matter how long or how little you have been doing them - the timeless success and leadership principles that have been given to me, I want to pass onto you. Get in touch with me to get this journey going.
I have this site set up primarily for high school students and athletes, teachers, coaches and parents. But truthfully, I am hoping that anyone can benefit with the information I will have here. I need to get on the ball to have things set up for each of these groups that are near and dear to my heart. Updates coming constantly as I get going on this endeavor. Big plans and changes coming as to what I'll be doing besides teaching. I certainly do not have all the answers, for I need to work on these principles probably a lot more than many people. But I do want to share the information that I find to be successful for me, my family and others.
That is where the Coach to Success part comes in. There was a coffee mug I got a long time ago (more than 27 years ago) that had the words "Expect Success" on it. (the mug is in the picture with me above) That got me thinking about how I needed to change some things in my life so that I could truly Expect Success in my life. So it's not "Expecting Success" to just happen without any effort or come at no cost... it's the opposite. There will be effort needed along with a cost that will have to be paid. There are things we can work on to improve ourselves so that we can Expect Success to come due to our efforts, attitudes, helping others, making a difference, etc. So since I've been in education and coaching for so long - I would like to be able to help in the area of expecting success in your life. Then, hopefully you can see how you can coach yourself too.
I am just getting started and quite frankly... I've put this off for way too long.
I do want your feedback, questions and comments. Get in touch with me using the form below.
Keep checking my blog. Check out my podcasts that I started recently and there will be more videos and interviews coming. Stay tuned - more coming soon!!
