Good 'ol Zig Ziglar Has Another Lesson For Us - Quote Of The Week!

3/29/2015

“You can change what you are and where you are by changing what goes into your mind.” – Zig Ziglar

If you don’t know who Zig Ziglar is, it’s about time you found out.  This guy has been helping to make a difference with so many people throughout so many years, it’s amazing.  What’s even more amazing is that he continues to make a difference for so many people and he passed away back in  November of 2012.  Zig has such a huge legacy where his lessons are still being taught today by the people who were working with him.

This thought that Zig brings up, which by the way is totally true, can be one of the biggest life-changers out there for us.  All we have to do is follow the statements’ advice.  If we change what goes into our mind on a daily basis, we will start seeing different results.  Those things that we let into our heads, affect everything we do.

The biggest thing for us is to realize that we have total control of what we let in.  Now remember that society and much of the world’s view will try and fight that.  The world’s view is always fighting to control people, and make no mistake about it, it’s doing just that.  The negativity, fear, ideas of judgment, jealousy, victim thinking, etc.; all go against what is good for us and our lives.

We have to be the ones that find information that will uplift us, give us hope, positive messages, confidence, helping others, working hard at improving, etc.; those are the messages that we need to seek out and bring into our heads.  For once ideas come into our heads – we cannot be the same person as we were before the idea got there.  That idea may help us to form new habits and help us get into action to either make ourselves better or worse; depending what we let into our heads.

There is another idea that I discussed with my Principles of Leadership students last week in my first presentation to them.  That idea was everything we do, every choice we make either takes us closer to what we want in life or it takes us further away.  That’s why it’s so important for us to kind of know where we are going to in life.  Think about this last thought and compare it to what Zig Ziglar is talking about.  Then, let me know if you want to share any thoughts, have a discussion or ask any questions about this.  It’s a life-changer.  Only if you let it be.

This Secret Is Good For All Of Us - Quote Of The Week!

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." – Mark Twain

As I look at finishing up our Winter Term classes and starting up with our Spring  Term classes, I’m looking to both finish up with some things and starting other things that are new.  When I saw this quote, it caught my eye because in my mind I’m wanting to get ahead for next week with my new classes but I’m also wanting to continue to work on my podcasts, videos, blog, etc.  It’s funny that a secret can really be so easy.

Of course my cup of coffee here on a quiet Saturday morning helps get the thinking going to see these types of things that I know I need to get started on.  It’s amazing how much I look forward to these Saturday mornings where I can work on some of my work for the upcoming week at school along with some of my other objectives  of things I want to do.  Saturdays mean different things to different people.  It’s always been part of my plan of getting ahead for whatever is going on for the upcoming week.

No matter what we need to tackle and get done, many times just getting started is the hardest part.  I had a few conversations with a few students a couple of weeks ago.  They would tell me about all the work they had to do in my class and some of their other classes and that it was so much and that they were so very stressed out.  They also had other things going on too. Work, sports, performances they were practicing for, etc.   My first point was that they need to learn how to handle things that are connected with time (which is just about everything) – and that is one of the many life lessons that school helps them learn about.  Time management and getting along with people are just two of the huge skills that school helps to teach to our young people.

The second thing I remember bringing up to them was one of the same things I try and keep telling myself.  It’s from Lou Holtz and it’s referred to as the WIN  principle; What’s Important Next!  What is the one thing you can do next that is important in getting something done towards your goal or whatever it is that you have to do?  It might be many things that have to get done, and when you look at them all together it looks like a mountain.  But what Coach Holtz mentions is that we have to take a look at what might be the most important one thing to get going on that will make the next thing possible, and then next, and so on.  A key is to realize that we have to pick out one thing to get done – it might be the most important project or item that has to get done the soonest.  It also should be the thing that will help us to get going on the other things too.  One thing at a time. What’s important next. Whatever it is I told my students, you have to get started on it.  It’s the same for all of us.

Failures Are Not Fatal, Unless We Fail To Change - Quote Of The Week!

“Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.”  John Wooden

It seems this thought, like many others, have been hovering around me in many different ways over the last few months.  Looking back it probably started while I was home recovering and I had a little more time to do some thinking along with having time to notice a few things more than I normally get the opportunity to do.

There have been many failures in my life and I have finally begun to look at them with more of a studying type of look and learning from it, instead of being a victim or blaming others.   I’ve had glimpses of this better type of thinking throughout my life, now it just seems to be happening more frequently as I get older.

I’m noticing things changing a lot more too.  With both of our kids off at college, there is more time for my wife and I to do things together along with time to do things ourselves too.  Both of our parents are getting older and all the issues that seem to come with age are starting to happen with it too.  Speaking of age, my wife and I are getting older too of course.  There are things that we have to make changes in so many areas of our lives right now.

That goes for all of us.   No matter what age we are at, learning from failures that happen (and they happen a lot in life), are necessary for success.  The idea of not changing when times dictate that we need to do that, those can be disastrous.

I look around and I see plenty of people that refuse to change.  They wear it as a badge of courage for not changing.  They either think they know everything and they don’t have to change.  Some think they need to show how tough they are and that they can do things on their own without any help from others.  This might be the most fatal failure of all – where people don’t think they have to change.  I think if you’re not changing, you are actually on your way to getting worse.  That’s one thing I don’t ever want to do – I’m looking to always get better.  How about you?

Real Progress Happens Outside Our Comfort Zone - Quote Of The Week

3/9/2015

"All progress takes place outside the comfort zone." – Michael John Bobak

This has been a reoccurring topic lately.  Getting out of our comfort zone really is the place where things happen.  It’s not a coincidence, it’s not luck, it’s just one of the many laws of success that present themselves to us throughout life.

As I sit here in my quiet kitchen on a sunny Saturday morning having a cup of coffee of course, I can’t help to be drawn to thoughts on how much I’ve avoided getting out of my comfort zone in my past.  Parts of my thoughts are of course how I wished I didn’t do that.  How I should have pushed through my limiting beliefs about doing things that made me feel uncomfortable and where I could be today if I would have done those things.

As I take a sip of my coffee I have quickly adjusted my thoughts as I look outside at the sunshine on all the snow we have, and I notice the snow that has disappeared from on top of our patio table.  A thought pops into my head about how things are improving weather wise and that spring is coming with warmer temperatures and the snow will be gone soon enough.  That also got me thinking about the fact that I cannot sit here and feel bad about past mistakes. That I know better enough to capture the lessons from those past instances and apply them to the new beginnings that are in front of me now.

I had a couple of great conversations with a few students throughout the past week.  A couple of current seniors, along with a couple of alumni that I saw who were on their spring breaks from college.  Our conversations were in part about this very point about getting out of your comfort zone and that’s where great things start happening.  It’s about the outstanding people that come into our lives when we get of our box of comfort and venture forward in new directions.  It’s about the new situations that present themselves if we have our eyes, ears, minds, and hearts open; for that’s the only way we will recognize them.  I even mentioned to one of my current seniors, that I too need to follow my own advice.  I need to get out of my comfort zone and look in new directions for things that will further my passion in life to help and serve others.

It sure does help to have that idea of what indeed is your passion(s) in life.  What gets you fired up?  What wakes you up early with those thoughts and ideas that start coming into your head where you can’t sleep anymore and you have to get up to get going on your day?  One of the other topics I spoke about with a current senior was the fact they didn’t know what they wanted to do after graduation and how scared they were that it’s coming so fast.  That’s the part about that we need to keep moving forward with doing things that we can learn new things, meet new people and have our eyes, ears, hearts and minds open to the new things that will come into our lives.

This senior did something right.  He said he changed his schedule around a little bit in order to take a couple more challenging classes instead of those that many people suggest to take that won’t challenge him too much.  This was another moment for me where I recognized that this student just became a teacher and taught me a lesson that I needed.  I too need to do some things that not only challenge me but will open new doors of possibilities in my life.  Those new possibilities will not only affect me personally but could also positively affect others in my life that could benefit from me getting out of my comfort zone.

So, as I grab another cup of coffee while my house is still quiet, I will look at today to see what are some other small things I can do to get out of my comfort zone and get going on some things that will pay some huge benefits soon or in the future.  What can you do with today that will help you move beyond your walls of comfort? What also can you share about that part of your journey that will help others too?

Our Dreams Are Our Creative Visions For Our Future ... It's Time To Put Them Into Action! - Quote Of The Week!

3/1/2015

"A dream is your creative vision for your life in the future. You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown." -- Denis Waitley

It’s funny how you see quotes or ideas at a time when you need to see them.  This was definitely true about this one.

My wife and I were just talking about at least thinking about and exploring other things to do within or out of our respective careers along with making other changes.  Both of us like what we do, but we both agree that we need to step outside our comfort zone when it comes to looking at improving ourselves.  That goes for professionally and personally.

Now that I’m past the worst part of my recovery from my back surgery, I have to make some changes to getting more in shape now, as my wife has said she needs to do that too.  So we are looking to find a gym that we can feel comfortable at and start ourselves back to being healthier.

I’ve had it on my mind for years about pursuing my Doctorate degree.  I’m starting to explore looking for information and I’m seeing that the idea still intrigues me, but there are plenty of items to think about besides the huge financial commitment that it would call for.  I know that maybe some other things need to happen before this big leap is made.

I’m starting to get my podcasts going. This has been long on my mind and I am pushing through the little fears (which used to be bigger fears) about doing these.  The old saying from my favorite book, The “Magic Of Thinking BIG” states that action cures fear.  That is totally true!!

So, on that note that is what I will be working hard to focus on as I embark on this new journey, new way of thinking, and a new way of actually doing things to make my dreams a reality.  I know that if I continue doing things the same way I’ve been doing them, then I will continue to not only getting the same results, but I won’t get out of the box that I call my current comfort zone.  I look at what I’ve been doing and I tell myself that I haven’t been doing things poorly – hence being comfortable in the comfort zone, but I know I need to change.  So here is to Action Curing Fear!!
