Make Your Somedays Turn Into Your Everyday

“Make your somedays turn into your everyday”—John Addison

I’ve has a lot of somedays.  Especially recently it seems.  Lot’s going on around me, and most of it is self-created.  The distractions have gotten in the way of my somedays.  When I saw this quote, I knew I needed to see it and let it sink in, since it was obviously just meant for me.  ;-)

I have been spending a large portion of most of these summer days just putting things off since I’ve been doing other things.  Since we got our new puppy, things have been a little crazy or maybe I should say different around our house.  This is our first dog – ever!  My wife and I did not grow up with dogs at all in our lives.  Our daughter has been begging for one ever since I can remember.  Well, after a combined 140 years of not owning a dog (our ages combined for our family of 4), we got one in June.

It sure makes life more interesting, that’s for sure.  I’ve always been against getting a dog because of the money and the time involved.  I guess I had to look at it differently since there is more to life than just the things I’ve been focused in on.  This takes the focus off of me and puts it onto something else that depends on me.  It is something bigger than just myself.  We as a family get to rally around and be a part of something that we all can do together and Kirby helps to bring us together more than we realized we could be.  He’s a difference maker with me and my family from the first time we saw him.

But, like I said – there have been distractions.  I’ve been the one getting up with him every morning early and we have connected because of it.  So there are things that I have not been able to work on or spend time on that I really want to do.  Throughout the day as well, it’s been up to me to take care of him and do the things that have to be done.  I’ve tried not to complain as I’m grateful that I have the time to be able to help him and our family out with this important investment.  It’s taken me awhile to realize that I simply need to re-allocate my time a little bit.  The time I have is more valuable now as this is a repeated lesson throughout my life that I needed to be reminded of.  I think it’s a lesson for everyone else too.

My somedays have to be brought into being todays.  My wife and I watched a news story the other night about a wealthy guy who was attending all of these different sporting events at the age of I think 55.  He had the means to do it and he said that he had a lot more yesterdays than he had tomorrows left in his life.  My wife and I looked at each other.  We know that is true and a very good statement to think about and then do something about.  Actually looking at the fact that we did get our first dog helped us with this thought too. I’ve heard this lesson brought up many times in my life.  It’s time to really take my somedays and make them part of my todays.

So as I get back into my blog postings, my podcasts, starting my book(s), my leadership lessons, classes and workshops, getting ready for another basketball season, another school year and to keep learning all I can about taking care of a dog – along with helping my family to realize that this statement is for them too, it’s time for my todays to connect with my somedays.  How about you?

We Have Greatness Inside Of Ourselves - It's About Time We Recognize That!

"Buried deep within each of us is a spark of greatness, a spark than can be fanned into flames of passion and achievement. That spark is not outside of you it is born deep within you." — James A. Ray

Getting caught up here after many distractions (some of them good ones) have gotten in the way.

This statement by James A. Ray is probably easier to see for some of us as we get older.   For others it is probably more difficult.  One of the keys I try and get my students to see that whatever the thoughts that are like this one, it's better to have them earlier in life than later.  The earlier people can get started on getting this spark to light up and catch fire inside of themselves, the better their lives will be.  Not only their lives, but those that they come in contact with too.

This is a constant item to focus on in our lives.  We need to first connect with these seeds of greatness inside of us.  Of course that is far more difficult to do as there are so many battles to be fought throughout life with things that will tell us the opposite - that we don't have any greatness inside of ourselves.  The battles will be fought against other people, the world view of things, social media, etc., but mainly it will be fought with ourselves.  I've always told my students, my basketball players, heck... anyone that will listen that we can do far more damage to ourselves with our self-talk than any other person can do due to us.  It is a battle worth fighting though, that's for sure.

We also need to focus in and find those things that are inside of us that we need to and want to do in our lives. Finding those things we have passion for can help lead us to what our true purpose is here in our lives.  Focusing on the things that can help us is one of the many things we need to get going on.  One of the other things, is to get rid of those things that get in the way of finding out what the greatness is inside of ourselves.

It can start today for you and me.  What are some of the things in our lives that we are spending our precious time on?  Are they things that are important to us?  Are they things that are helping us go in a positive direction in our lives?  Are they things that help us connect with great people that will add positive value to our lives?  Or, are they things that go against those things?  So, get started today.  Read more things that get you thinking in a more positive direction of your life and what are you doing with it.  Find the people that have what you want in life.  Learn from those people that can add value to your life instead of taking value away from you and what you want to do.  One other key - is to be that person for others too.  Always look to add value to others and watch the great things that can happen to you in your life.

As always, share with me some ideas that are working for  you.  I'm always looking for ways to improve and get better along with helping others to do the same too.

Feels good to be back... I need to keep on this trail for sure. :-)

A Vision Is Not Just A Picture Of What Could Be; It's Really So Much More!

"A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more." – Rosabeth Moss Kanter

A common theme that keeps repeating itself for me on Saturday mornings with my coffee; I am looking for, finding and reading about some great ideas to share with others.  Today is no exception as I find some empowering quotes, articles, videos, blogs, etc., that I will be utilizing for future use.

One that I came across this morning was this quote from Rosabeth Moss Kanter.  The reason it connected with me was that I was listening to a podcast the other day about traits of successful entrepreneurs and one of the first ones that was discussed was that of having Vision.  Now, whether you are an entrepreneur or not doesn’t really matter.  I remember in the podcast that the speaker mentioned that exact point due to the well known fact that these many skills that entrepreneurs have, those same skills connect with success for everyone in life.

One of the many things that I try and get my students to see, think and act upon is the idea of having a vision for their future.  One of the many ideas I share with them is about dreams and some students think that whole term is something that won’t come real, or they hear it all the time and that it’s not something for them.   So whether you call it having dreams, having a vision, etc., the key point is doing something about those ideas.  The action step that is needed is what helps to make these things happen.

The point I always share to my students is that if they don’t dream it, think about it, that it (whatever it is) won’t happen!   First thing is there has to be that thought or idea and then there must be the action steps to make it become real.  Without the thought or idea – there will be plenty of actions steps (going through life, getting up every day, working at something, the regular mundane things, etc.,) and we will end up some place for sure.  However, we will not be the ones in charge – it will be life dictating us on what happens in our lives.

I love how this point about vision directly connects with us having a call to become something more, something better, something bigger than where we are currently at.  I've had this calling inside of me my whole life and now that I am older I can see that fact that I've always had this in me.  Wow… that just hit me… as I think back throughout my life of having this idea or calling inside of me – of making a difference with others, helping them to do more, get better and go in a direction that is right for them.  It seems that I've only just really focused on this for the last 15-18 years or so, but it has had roots in me for as long as I can remember.

My advice to you – don’t wait so long to get in touch with what’s inside of you.  Have that vision for your life connected to your heart and soul.  Get rid of the distractions in your life and those around you that add to the wasting of time, drama, stress, etc., and zero in on that better self that is inside of you along with doing the things to doing more and getting better.
