Being Present & Focusing On Giving Others My Attention

10/21/2021

Found a great video clip that comes from Tony Robbins that reminds us about the importance of being in the present moment - wherever that might find us - it's really the only place to be.  Check out the video HERE.

Many times we get caught up in the past along with worrying about the future too.  We forget to look down to where our feet are, right now at the moment.  I love that reminder as it's quick and easy for us to make sure we know where we are right now & that's all we can do at the moment, is be where we are at.   I heard something recently from another podcast that gets right on top of this topic.  It was mentioned that what keeps us up at night are usually fearful, negative, worrisome issues.  Where the things that usually get us out of bed are more hopeful, inspiring, things to go after for the day, etc.

It's all part of not looking in the rear-view window of our lives and not focusing too much of the things way out in front of us either.  My good friend, Dr. Jeff Lip has mentioned it many times - if we get focused too much on the past, often times it leads to depression.  The fact that we are not as young as we used to be, the relationships that we lost, the regrets start piling up, etc.   If we focus too much on the future - we get anxious, worried about things we think are going to happen, etc.  We miss out on the present, the place we are currently at.  It's the only place that we can actually do something about.

Finally, when I am able to focus on other people and looking to help them; I am finding that not only do my problems get smaller, but I find out new ways & ideas of dealing with them too.  It allows me to open up to see new possibilities instead of being locked up inside my own head and trying to figure out solutions just from my perspective.

There Is Power In Our Present By Having Hope In Our Future!

“If there is hope in the future, there’s power in the present.” – John Maxwell

As I was at the gym over the weekend, I was listening to my usual podcasts while I was there.  From Zig Ziglar’s podcast there was something that struck me as connecting  with me right now.  There are most day and most time throughout each day that I do have hope in the future and John Maxwell is right on – that does make me feel there is power that I have in the present.

There are also those few times where I don’t feel very hopeful about the future and I do feel less powerful, less confident, more negative, more down, etc., towards the present moment.  But I also have remembered that I cannot stay in that feeling for very long.  I’ve made a conscious choice in the past that when these sad, negative, down feelings take over, I first tell myself that they will not last and then second, I try and put myself right into the middle of those feelings.  I want to wrap my arms around them, and almost taste what those negative feelings are all about.  Knowing that the quicker I can connect with them, the quicker I can learn and make adjustments from them along with quickly moving on towards feeling better and moving forward.

Looking back throughout my life there have been plenty of moments that I stayed stuck in them and thereby giving up control to those negative, sad, depressing feelings.  I have learned (through reading a few books, listening to some podcasts, etc., that I need to get connected with those sad, hopeless feelings and thoughts to be able to dissect them, learn from them and become better and move on.  When those feeling hit me, I’m not feeling too hopeful about the future and that robs me of my today.  I am working hard at not letting that happen.

John Maxwell also mentions about the size of our hope will determine how far we go in life.  From these episodes that I have been through, I totally agree with that idea.  As Kevin Miller puts it – “You need more hope.  You need to increase it and enhance it and establish it.”  We all need more hope for sure.  We do need to increase it and establish more of it in our lives and in the lives of those that are around us.  That is a very powerful and life-changing thought.  The more we can have hope for others, the more they can have it for themselves.  There are so many people around us that are looking for an example of finding hope in themselves.  Sometimes it’s up to us to have faith in a person, believe in them, stick with them and thereby transferring our hope in them into themselves where they can latch onto to it and start believing in themselves and thereby changing their futures and those people around them.

I find it so awesome and inspiring the ideas and thoughts that can come to me with a cup of coffee, some fresh air coming in the house next to where I’m sitting, time relaxing and focusing in on a thought (or in this case a quote), and then all the ideas that come rushing into my head during this time of solitude.  Just another thought – maybe you can try it out for yourself?   As always, let me know how it goes.

We All Have To Have Confidence and Hope In Our Lives

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." - Helen Keller

As I sit here with my (you guessed it) first cup of coffee, I’m listening to the rain and I’m thinking about many things.  Most of the things I’m thinking about  (my wife and family, my basketball coaches and players that I’m blessed to be working with, what I’m calling “the summer of change”, the books I want to read, and how thankful I am for this cup of coffee among many other things), I get a very contagious feeling of hope and peacefulness.

I’ve always tried to have an optimistic attitude or outlook in my life.  There are many times where this is difficult and challenging, but I always strive to get back to having this type of outlook.  I do know for sure that Helen Keller was correct in that things cannot be accomplished without hope and confidence.  At least anything that matters.

Having an optimistic attitude or outlook in life is a lot easier for us when we are doing things that are connected to our heart and have passion for.  It also connects with the people that we have in our lives as we need others to help encourage us, love us where we are at, support us, listen to us along with us doing the same for them.  This helps instill faith in ourselves that we can achieve things we want to do.   If we don’t have all these pieces to the puzzle, things get a little bit more difficult and that at times will lead to not having hope or confidence in ourselves and in our situations that we live in.

This comes back to the start, the foundation that we have to have to work on setting the table so to speak, for ourselves to have this optimism in our lives.  We have to reach down inside of ourselves and find out what are the things that light us on fire!  What are the things that we get fired up and make us want to go after certain things in life?  We need to be conscious of the thoughts, information and ideas coming into our minds along with finding and keeping those people in our lives that help us and that we are able to help too.

Start today by looking at this quote and figure out what feeds into this optimism in our lives.  Then look at what are the things in your heart that you know you want to accomplish and go after.  Is what you do, day in and day out, helping you have more hope and confidence in your life?  Or are those things pointing to not having hope and no confidence in your life?  Figure out just one change today that you can make to start feeling better about things.  Then keep working on that one thing as you identify one other thing, then another, and another and so on.  Just keep working on one thing and keep it going as those will lead to other things to work on and improve and then just watch the changes that start to happen.

What’s one thing for you to start on right now?  One thing for me – to start reading more books, more articles, etc.  Another quick one for me is to put more action into my days of doing the things that I have to do to make things happen.  Anything that can help make me better, I have to do.  Share yours as I bet it might help someone else out too.

Take Some Time To Look Around In Our Lives... So Much To See... Quote Of The Week!

"Look back and be grateful, look ahead and be hopeful, look around and be helpful." - Unknown

Taking some time more often than usual to look around in our lives, is something that can be very beneficial and valuable for us to do. Just taking a few moments now and then to pause the craziness in our lives and look around at all the things that will be helpful to us.

This quote jumped out at me and I'm a firm believer that as long as we are looking, things that we need to see do make an appearance - then it's up to us to recognize that and grab a hold of it and use it.  This unknown quote is something that did just that for me.

As I look ahead to having my back surgery this week, I must say it’s amazing to have so many thankful thoughts and feelings flooding over me.  Looking at others that I met at a pre-surgery class that I went to last week, that they will be having the same surgery as I am and to see the different circumstances that they are going through compared to me.  Amazingly grateful and feeling very blessed.

I am definitely hopeful as I look ahead to after the surgery is complete.  I will have a very long recover period where I will not be in school and I’ve told my principal that I will still have my hand on things from home for some of the time I will be out.  This has also led me to know how truly grateful I am that I have a job that I’m very passionate about.  It has struck me as to how much I will miss my students, working with them, helping them, getting to know them, seeing them understand things, see positive changes they are making, etc.  My coworkers are my friends as they are the ones that I spend a huge amount of time with – I will be missing them too.

The looking around to be helpful is something that I have prided myself on my entire teaching career.  Now I’m the one that will need some help.  It brings me to tears as I am writing this as I have my wife and my family.  My wife will be taking some time away from her job to help me as I get back home after my hospital stay.  My son and daughter will be home from college for a few weeks, they will be around to help me and my wife out.  My mom too will be helping out along with other family members, friends and neighbors that have told us they will do whatever we need.  This also ties into the thankful and grateful part.  I cannot understand at times how lucky and blessed I am.  Both for having a job that I care deeply about working with my students, but also all the fabulous people in my life that are there for me when I need them and are there other times for us to do things together and help each other at the different stages in our lives.

These quotes of the week always make sense (at least to me) to start a week off on a Monday with.  This quote especially should be one that you should take a moment or two and let it sink in a little.  (all of these that I find I feel the same too – but this one is a little extra special)  Then let me and others know what does it mean to you – how can you use this to make some changes this week and beyond that will pay some huge dividends sooner or later in your life.

So if you are reading this in the next couple of days – have me in your thoughts would you please – say a prayer if you are inclined to do that, for I will appreciate all of them.

"Never lose hope.  You never know what tomorrow may bring" - Zig Ziglar

When I saw this quote - it of course connected with me coming from Zig.  But it also connected with me from the standpoint that I have been hearing and reading a lot about hope lately.  Zig's right.  We can't ever lose hope in our lives.  It's too important.  With having no hope in life, it becomes hard to be able to look forward to anything.

It's amazing that when you need to have something cross your path - at a time that you really need to see it - it happens.  This quote is that for me.  I need to not lose hope on things in my life as lately, things have been a bit challenging and I tend to get a bit down about those things, I certainly cannot give up hope. There are too many important things I need to work on and accomplish. Too many people I need to help, along with helping myself too.   Those things won't happen if I lose hope and give up.  That would be playing small and that's not  the way life is meant to be.

More thoughts coming soon.....

“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” – Dale Carnegie

This is one of those things that I think most people always are looking for in their lives - finding something to have fun with, be passionate about - and be lucky enough to be doing it for a living. Success comes in so many different forms, but the foundation comes from this statement from Mr. Carnegie, is one of the many things that the sooner we understand it, the better off we are.

For me, teaching is fun.  Working with my students, getting to know them, making a difference with them, helping them see the many possibilities for them and their futures; that's what it's all about.  But now since I've been in education for 24 years, I am looking to make some changes to find other things that will challenge me, make me a better person, help me grow and help me to do more in this limited lifetime that we all get.  No, I'm not leaving the classroom.  Yet.  I do see some different things for me on the horizon - teaching & coaching will always be part of who I am, what I'm about and what I do.  Since I'm still enjoying these things, I know that I am going to continue doing them.  I also know that there are other things out there, dreams that I have had and not yet done much about.  It's time.

What is it for you?  For the adults out there, do you have fun and enjoy what you spend most of your time doing?  Take a few moments to do some homework for yourself - and stop and think about how your life is going, what direction you are going, what are those things inside of you that fire you up?  We all have dreams and ideas of what we would love to do - why not start to try and make some of those things happen?  What could you have fun at and still make a living?  Or, do you have enough spare time to do those things in your life, that help make it worthwhile to keep doing what you are doing?

Another main point here - life is way too short to do things you hate all the time.  It does us no good at all.   The stress and worry alone affects everything in our lives.  Our health, our relationships with others, our attitudes, etc.  For the younger people out there - great lessons here.  I tell my students all the time.  Find things that fire you up.  Find things that when you wake up in the morning, you can't wait to get started on.  While you are young and in high school (or even before high school), read, talk to people, have your minds open to the many possibilities that are out there; and start identifying things that you enjoy and see how you can get paid to do them.

I am always interested in feedback - but this one would be unique to hear some thoughts and ideas on both sides.  Do you have dreams that you are going after?  Or, do you have dreams and you have felt that there is no use even trying anymore for them.  (remember the discussion points on the grave yard being the most valuable pieces of real estate in the world) Those that hate your job, what do you hate about it? What would you change to make it better?  Let me know - I enjoy learning from others, getting help from others and helping others too!

Quote of the Week - January 21, 2013

"If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes." - Andrew Carnegie

Finding this quote on a Monday and thinking about having goals for today (a teacher meeting day) along with goals for the week ahead; got me thinking about having these thoughts going for me long term. Instead of just a Monday or a week, I'm thinking (and I know that) I need to have these going for my future.  Thinking about Andrew Carnegie (the steel industry guy) and all the success that he had with people and leadership; I know it's coming from a good source too.

I had a good discussion with a colleague today about focusing in on important things in life.  That there are only so many things that we can control and actually do something about ourselves.  Happiness comes from the fact that we have the ability to command over our thoughts on those things that are important and that are really important to us.  The key is to realize this as soon as we can for then we still have time on our side to do something with this fact.  The longer it takes for us to realize the truth to this statment the further away from true happiness I think we will be.

What are your thoughts on this quote?  What lessons can you teach me and others with your opinions and thoughts?  Please let me know here.
