Having An Open Minded Mindset, Sure Does Help

10/19/2021

Listened to a great podcast recently where Ann Hiatt was a guest on John Lee Dumas' podcast, "Fire Nation".  She had so many powerful things to say that it got me going in some great thinking directions, not only for myself, but also my students too. I had them listen to this podcast to help them see the connection to the week's Positivity Project connection to Open-Mindedness.

Check out the podcast HERE.

A few things that I connected from this podcast & I know will help me with what I want to do in my profession as an educator and a coach - First, there are so many "behind the scenes" things or "under the radar" things that I can do to build myself & my profession, stronger & having more of an impact.  The little everyday things that go unnoticed by most - I can focus on them everyday, knowing they bring value to what I want to do.  Waking up early, reading more, getting to work early & getting prepared.  Making time for others to help solve issues & questions before they become problems.  So many things that we all can do, that might not get other people to notice - but we know are the right things to do.

Second thing that stood out to me was the idea of staying ahead of myself as I learn new things, pick up new skills, be open to new opportunities, etc.  There is this mindset of "reinventing" ourselves every so often.  I certainly do not want to stay where I'm at as far as abilities & knowledge.  It's become apparent to me recently that I want to keep learning new things, meeting new people, coming up with new ideas, etc., until my final day on earth.  That's just me.

Finally - there are so many different paths towards success & that one way does not work for everyone.  Success is such a broad definition for so people.  One thing for sure that I'm seeing more and more (especially with my new position as an ESL Coach at school) is that my positive attitude / outlook / mindset, etc., is a difference maker.  I see many people that are of the opposite mindset and I see the struggles they are having compared to others.  Remember, having a positive attitude / outlook / mindset, does not mean you don't have problems.  It means that you can solve them A TON better with a positive mindset than with a negative one.  THAT IS FACT!

EQ - It's A Difference Maker

10/1/2019

Found a great article that I had to share with my students on the importance on having Emotional Intelligence in our lives in order to succeed.   Check out the article HERE.  It got me thinking about a book that I read years ago called.."The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book" by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves.  It's one that I had to pull out of one of my bags as I put it in there with great intent to read it this past summer... needless to say I did not but I still need to read this again.

EQ is something that all of us can work on to get better at.  It has so much to do with all the important areas of life - check out this picture that is a great indicator:

Looking at these "leaves", I can see so many of them that (at least to me - my opinion) that they simply blow having a large IQ, out of the water!!  Now again, don't get me wrong as I know having a great IQ is not horrible.  But the way I see it, the things on this "tree" are just a lot more meaningful in & throughout life that I'd take these things first.  It's a good thing too, since I know my IQ is not off the charts anywhere.

Emotional Intelligence predicts performance, so it certainly seems like a good thing to work on and try to improve throughout our lifetime.  As I sit here and think about my students (some, maybe not all of them) and the opportunity they have for their lives to improve them, now, at their age... wow I am just blown away comparing it to my timeline of knowing about this after the age of 35 (at least!)

This brings a HUGE connection to our term this week from our Positivity Project - Open Mindedness.  It's so powerful to be able to take some new ideas and come up with ways of improving ourselves.  So the backend of this idea of my students getting exposed to these skills now at their young ages compared to me where it was later in life, and think of all the people who never take a venture out to learn about EQ or even improving their own EQ.  WOW!  I think we all know plenty of people who need to work on improving this in their lives, but choose to ignore it or even let their negative thinking get in the way of ever even trying.  I know that I do not want to be one of those people who won't ever look at this "tree" above and not want to try and get better in all of those "leaves".

Great Conversation With Matt Haffner

I had an amazing discussion on so many levels a few weeks ago with Matt Haffner - a return guest on my podcast show.  You can listen to my show HERE.  He's a former student of mine and Matt's passion is fishing - but the lessons that he shares are endless for all areas of life.  Join me in listening to his message about the importance of critics in our life, chasing after your passions, not falling into the what society says we have to do to be successful.  I love the fact that this 28 year old has so many lessons about life for us.  He is also becoming a student too as he is realizing (from a friend's advice) that he needs to be more open minded - which is what he is starting to do.  Again... a student becoming a teacher for me to keep learning lessons that I need to learn.  It's one of those things for me that I need constant reminding of and that helps me to keep working hard at.  Actually on a daily basis it's good for me to be reminded about this.  Hope you have your student hat on too.   Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly
