Optimism Is Key - At least in my opinion

2/7/2020

This was a powerful post that my students worked on - a few weeks ago - I'm getting off of the procrastination train, and finally getting these going, like I told them I would!  There were 2 key parts that I used for this one - both from John O'Leary.

First was a blog post that he put out there about "How Heros Speak".  In this post he mentioned about a pro hockey player that invested time in with him when he was a little boy, recovering from his burns that were part of John's story early on in his life.  It's all about the people that speak words into our hearts, souls, minds, etc., throughout our lifetime.  These heros don't necessarily wear capes either, but the do interject such powerful belief into us that it ends up making a HUGE difference in our lives.  He brought up the other fact about the truth is that we are supposed to be the same hero for others. There are other people out there, ones we don't even know perhaps, but we are the difference-makers that they need in their lives.

I have believed this ever since I was probably in college as that's when I found out how important it was to have people believing in me for my life.  Dr. Wells Cook was the biggest influencer in my life, next to my parents and my wife - that truly made a huge difference with me.  His encouraging words pointed me into being an educator.  What a ride it has been from first meeting him back in the fall of 1985.  That also happens to be the time I met my wife as well, at the same university - Central Michigan University!  From then until now - these two people (again, other than my parents) have changed my life in so many incredible ways!  Not sure where I'd be without them.

I love this part of his post & I now it is speaking to you as well:  "Your great opportunity, my friend, is to realize the truth that you are intended to be a hero for others. My encouragement before you grab your cape or hockey stick and race out the door is to realize this: your ability to positively impact others hinges on your own thoughts and your own words.
Rudyard Kipling wrote, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” As with any drug, our words can be either life-giving or life-depleting. Choose today to use your words to encourage others to take back their life, ignite their possibility and change their world.
And in wondering where to begin sharing heroic optimism with others, consider starting with the reflection in the mirror."

The second part of this assignment came from his video clip.  In it he asks us to follow our own minds and to catch ourselves when we start going down a negative road as far as our thoughts and comments go.  Try to write them down & find some replacements for them, with more positive and encouraging thoughts & words.  I mentioned this to my students and have always told my basketball players this too.  Nobody else can do as much damage & hurt us, more than we can do it to ourselves.  I've been working on catching myself quicker when I start going down that negative rabbit hole to problems & negativity.  I need to find ways to eliminate problems, not head into more.

Let me know your thoughts on these 2 items.   I think they are simply pure gold. Heck, anything from John O'Leary usually is.   Check him out HERE at his website.  He's got his 2nd book coming out in May 2020.  Check out his first book before you read his new one.  You'll love it!

Challenges Offer Learning Opportunities

"If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you." – Unknown

One thing I really look back on in my life was that I got this message and took it to heart.  Today, as a guy over 50, I have no problem what so ever taking this to heart since I’ve been through enough of life that I can the value and truth to this statement.  The funny thing is, I’ve had plenty of people telling me that when I was younger and of course I didn’t really listen to them.  Equally as comical is the fact that I give this same message to my 2 kids along with my students and basketball players.  I hope they listen better than I did.

I’ve seen more challenges as I’ve gotten older along with most of those challenges being a lot more serious and heavy duty than most of the ones that I had when I was younger.  When I was younger I thought those challenges were serious of course at that time, only to learn that you do what you can and get help if you need it and then time moves on, and just about all those challenges are a distant memory as I got older.

What I know now is that those times when those things come up in life are meant to test us.  They are meant to give us some of the most valuable lessons we will ever learn throughout our lifetime.  That’s if we look at that way while being in the middle of those problems and issues.  That’s the challenging part.  It’s really easy to look back on memories to think about them or at least try and remember them for the lessons that were there.  I think it’s a hundred times more valuable if we can look for the lessons while we are in the middle of the lesson.

Also remember, we learn from many different sources.  Other people telling us about their stories of their ups and downs – and the lessons they learned. Even watching others go through things without them telling us about them.  We learn from reading books, listening to podcasts, seeing current events going on around us, etc.  The most valuable of them all – those things that we go through ourselves!   We are the best source of learning for our own lives since we are in the title role playing ourselves in our own story.

Work Towards What Really Matters

"If what you're working for really matters, you'll give it all you've got." — Nido Qubein

One of the most important things we can do during our lifetime is to find out what really matters to ourselves in life.  I hear it like a broken record, over and over again- find your passion in life, find out your reason why you do what you do!  I know the earlier we find out the answer, the better our lives will be.  Also remember, it's not just about us finding this out to make our own lives better.  Everyone we meet and get connected with, throughout our lifetime, will benefit too.

Since you have started your journey (the day you were born), and you are now thinking about your future a little bit more (especially seniors), you have the fantastic opportunity to start figuring out what your why is all about.  It's really a powerful concept that many people never really figure out during their lifetime.  As we go through life there comes opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to find out things about ourselves.  This all works in helping us to figure out our direction of our life along with answering that all important question, why am I here?

I have been telling people that I have a new mantra in life - I don't give a rip!  You can substitute something else for rip, but be careful. ;-)  It's not meant to be a negative about not caring.  To me it's about me focusing on those things that are important in life to me (my faith, my family, my students, my basketball players, my friends, my future, my dreams and goals, etc.).  I don't want to waste time on things that don't really matter.  Things that won't make a real difference in life.  When I'm on my death bed, I want to look back and see that I spent time on things that mattered in life.

I've spent a lot of my 50 years or so doing that.  But I've also spent too much time on things that don't matter at all.  I think I'm old enough to know better and more importantly to do something about it.  The thing is, I've always been old enough to do something about it.  That's what I want to help you see that you too can do something about it at any time.  As with many success principles, it helps to get going on this sooner rather than later.  How are you on identifying your WHY in your life?  Get going today!  Let me know how's it going and / or if you need help figuring things out.

Get Ready For Struggles - There Are Lessons To Learn

"If there is no struggle, there is no progress." — Frederick Douglass

When I saw this quote, there were a few things I thought about right away.  First, on how true it really is.  As this weekend there were some struggles in our house with moving both of our kids back home from their college apartments. My wife and I rented a truck to bring home the furniture and other things that they had with them and moved it all back home into our garage, our house, basement, etc.  Of course the kids were there too – it would not have gotten done without us helping each other.  We got it all done and it actually went a lot better than I thought it would.

Another thing that connected with me and this quote was from my Principles of Leadership classes that have been going on this spring term at school.  Just about all the speakers, movies, presentations, articles, audios, and video clips have had this common theme with them too.  The message from those:  There will be struggle, but the struggle is what makes the journey worth it.  We can’t get out of life without struggles.   There is that saying that life is 10% of what happens to us and 90% as to how we react to those things.

It is amazing to hear and see so many others have struggles too.  In today’s world of social media where many people post things online as to how wonderful things are going, all the great pictures of family and friends, and all the celebrations and achievements – it’s no wonder where this can depress or upset people.   I am finding out that just about all the people posting those wonderful things do indeed have struggles going on.  It’s not even just people posting things out on social media – others are struggling too.

I have also found out within those struggles comes opportunity.  Dr. Randy Pausch (The Last Lecture) talked a lot about the brick walls in life. Those represent those things that get in the way of our lives, the struggles that we all must figure out.  Yes, we need to overcome those brick walls, go over them, go around them, heck even go under them if we have to.  Randy talked about another angle that I want you to think about.  He mentioned that those brick walls are there for us to show how bad we want to accomplish things in life. They are there to keep others out that don’t want it bad enough.  Please understand there will be others that get in your way.  They are part of that struggle for sure.  He pointed out that some of our brick walls won’t be made out of brick at all. They will be made of flesh, for they will be people that we have to get through or get around to obtain our goals and dreams. Knowing that this will be coming our way throughout life, make the decision now to not let these brick walls stop us. Figure out some ideas now!

Do More Than You Get Paid For???  Are You Crazy? - Quote Of The Week

1/11/2015

"Do more than you are paid for. There are never any traffic jams on the extra mile." -- Brian Tracy

Starting off the new year with a new attitude about your effort, might just be one of the keys to not only accomplish more but you might just find a few more opportunities come your way too.  This is one concept that I try and bring to my students every year, every class; and I try and use it too in my life.  Doing more than you get paid for is one of the best ways to make things happen in your professional life.

First off, people notice.  Whether it’s your boss, your co-workers, your customers or your competition; someone will pick up the fact that you are someone that gets things done.  From these other people noticing you doing more than you get paid for, things will happen that will be good for you and your future.  More opportunities for more money, more opportunities for doing things that will advance your career, and others will turn to you to help them get things done.  That is another thing that pays well – becoming a problem solver for others.

The other thing that helps you out with you doing more – the simple fact that most people don’t do it.  Due to that fact, anytime that you do a little bit more, the 85+%  of others that are not doing that, all of them make you look great!  Remember, you don’t have to pay them or even thank them.  That’s the big part of this whole equation that works the best. Since there is such a large percentage that don’t take this approach in life, anybody who does look to do more than they get paid for, it gets noticed even more.

Please understand this concept:  just a little bit more effort on your part will be maximized many times over by the lack of effort by most other people.  Powerful and easy to do.  Even if you just focused on doing 1% more everyday – think about what you would have to show after one month.  Look at the year and what you will accomplish with that concept.  Wow!   Why don’t you start today?  At school, at work, at home, etc.  Try it and let me know how it goes.

More reasons to have some gratitude in your life .... Quote Of The Week

7/28/2014

"Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an antiseptic.” — John Henry Jowett

I have found this quote to be totally true many times in my life, but more so recently.  As I have been continuing my recovery from my knee-replacement surgery, I have focused on this quote many times, especially over the last day or two and let me tell you; gratitude is every bit of a vaccine, an antitoxin and antiseptic.    There have been a few down moments when I start feeling sorry for myself, but this is such a great attitude and outlook adjustment.  I have talked to my wife about this too and she totally agrees and has helped me to refocus my attention back on getting better and looking ahead.

This also got me remembering a few more things about my stay at the hospital.  My first roommate was an elderly gentleman from another country, who could not speak English to well.  Plus, being in such close quarters, it was not hard to hear things about what he was battling.  He was dealing with throat cancer, something wrong with his jaw along with having recently broken one of his legs too.  This got me feeling better right away about my status but I also picked up on how hard his son was working on making sure he was being taken care of.  The questions, the time spent in the hospital and on the phone, all to make sure his dad was getting the best care possible.  His son had to be a little younger than me, but I was impressed. The language barrier was helped a little with a few doctors & other medical personnel that could speak this man’s native language.   So many times you hear of people kind of being left on their own when it comes to these types of health issues.  This man's son did such a great job, a lesson for me and everyone.  Well, they had to move his dad from this hospital I was at to another one for the different and specialized treatment that he needed.

I was alone for a couple of hours until my new roommate arrived.  Again, quickly finding out that he was a guy my age having just went through his second back surgery. Now this got my attention quickly as I have back surgery coming up in early November.  This guy was a nice guy, hard worker throughout his lifetime and again, I could pick things up even without really talking to him right away.  We did talk a few times through the curtain telling about our stories a little bit to each other.  It was great to see the support that he had there from his wife and his mom the first evening after his surgery.  Then his wife was there for a good part of the day on Thursday.  He also had a buddy that came in on Friday morning to visit for a little bit too.

I noticed quickly this guy appreciated the people that came to visit him and that he was very grateful for their time spent with him.  He was in a lot of pain it seemed, but it didn't keep him from doing the little things he had to start to do to get better.  We found ourselves talking a few times, trying to keep encouraging each other a little bit along with having some fun with some light-hearted comments and a bit of laughter.  We spent a little time talking about how will have to find a new profession / career as with his injuries his doctors have told him he would have to make some changes.  As I had my time to spend thinking, this got me thinking how grateful I was for the time spent with both roommates and the lessons that each gave to me.

I am now into my Physical Therapy sessions.  First was four  visits here at home and now I have started this week going to my regular Physical Therapist as an outpatient.  I knew it would be challenging and difficult, but I have also been thinking about this for months leading up to my surgery, the fact that I have to do these exercises and work through the pain in order to get better.  I can tell already from the people that I have been working with, that there are many more lessons of gratitude here for me to learn from and to focus on.  There will be more thoughts, observations, lessons and discussions coming from this for sure.  We all have things that we go through everyday.  There are always lessons of gratitude there for us to learn from for sure.  What are some of the lessons you have learned on your journey in life?

"You can't stay around if you're not getting better. You have to constantly be looking for ways to improve your value." - Cal Ripken Jr

If there was one guy who always looked to get better, it was Cal Ripken Jr.  He had to do just that if set a record of playing in 2, 130 consecutive games.  This is one thing that I always try and mention to my students every year, and of course I try  listen to it too; and that is to become a person of value.  To your friends, your family, to your employer, everyone!

In today's world there seems to be more opportunities to get better and improve ourselves but for many reasons it seems more difficult too.  Lot's going on with the economy, pay-cuts, job loss, technology in all parts of our lives, the negativity out there in society, politics, etc.  There sure are a lot of distractions that's for sure.  That is probably the best reason to listen to Mr. Ripken.  In today's world, more than ever before we MUST look to improve and get better due to all of these things going on around us.  There is an old saying that says if we are not improving and moving forward - we are really moving backwards in life.  Even if we think that we are "doing pretty good", or "I'm better off than 'ol so and so neighbor of mine", that type of thinking won't create anything that is worth working hard for.

For me, as I get a tad bit older here, I know this has to be the case for me.  I can't afford to not get better.  This has to happen in my marriage, me being a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a teacher, a coach, a Christian, a neighbor, a friend, a nephew, a cousin, a brother-in-law, a son-in-law and all the other hats I wear in my lifetime.  These things is who I am.  Like Cal says - if I want to stay around, I always have to look for ways to get better and improve.  Every single day.  How about you?  What does Cal's quote mean to you?  Always looking to learn from others... leave me a thought or two.

“No one limits your growth but you. If you want to earn more, learn more.” -- Tom Hopkins

In today's world where it seems many people want to blame others for their problems, Tom Hopkins brings up a great thought about one thing that we totally have control over.  Our ability to choose to learn more can make all the difference in the world for not only ourselves but everyone that is around us too.

We tend to get in the way of ourselves a lot when it comes time to accomplishing things and growing in life; at least I know I do for sure.  This whole mindset about we really do have control over so many things in our lives simply by the way we choose things and our ability to think and control our own minds - it's amazing when we really stop and think about it.

I've been listening to a lot of Napoleon Hill lately - by the way which I recommend getting some of his books and audio recordings that are out there for everyone.  It is one of his central teaching points that we should work to have control over our own minds and the way we think because that connects to everything we do in our lives.  We should look to learn everyday about things that interest us along with those new ideas and ways of thinking that can help us help others.  Being a life-long learner is the way to go as I've figured out the learning never stops.  As we get into the busy holiday season coming up - I will be trying to remember the fact that I need to continue to learn more, grow, get better and keep moving forward towards dreams and goals that I have along with helping those around me do the same.  I don't want to get all caught up in blaming others for my lot in life.

Remember, earning is not just about money.  It's about earning more relationships in life, earning more peace of mind, earning more positive energy, etc.  What are your thoughts?  Any to share with me and the world?  I'm always looking to learn more from others as I know I don't know everything other than I know I need to be open to learning more to keep getting better and better in all I do.

"Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently." -Henry Ford

There was a little bit of a connection to this being a Monday and this wonderful quote from Henry Ford.  When I saw it this morning I thought about the fact that I needed to reset and begin a few things again today, being the start of another week.  This week is crucial leading up to the new school year and there are plenty of things I need to work on in a more intelligent way than I've done before.

This holds true with work things that we have to do, but more importantly it also has to do with life things too.  The sooner we look at the difficulties in our lives, how did we arrive there, what things can we learn from those experiences, how can I make changes so it doesn't happen again; are just some of the things we need to think about.  This of course is all wieved arround the fact that we can't let our own negative thinking get in the way of learning from our failures.

One thought I had when I read this over a few times this morning, was that all the things I've failed at throughout my life, I must not have learned much since some of the things I'm still struggling with.  From there it might be a thought like, 'what makes you think this time will be any different?'   Another one; 'who are you kidding, you know you'll end up right where you started as you have tried this so many times.'

A funny thing though.  As I started running the usual negative thoughts in my head there was a little response, just a little voice that said - hey, this time can be different.  It also said that 'you know you can do this', along with little pictures in my mind about me being successful and actually doing these things that I'm working on doing.  The key is that over time (and for me it's been a long journey) I have learned little bits and pieces even if I wasn't successful at accomplishing things that I wanted to do, I still got just a tiny bit better than I was before.

There is the key!  As long as you come coming back, struggle, try and do more, try and get better, keep trying to accomplish things in your life; this quote from Henry Ford will continue to hold truth for you.  This is why it's important to continue to read and listen to things more than once.  In fact it should be many times - some experts even say almost 20 times we need to read or listen to something for it really to become a habit, or it gets placed inside of us that we can draw on it any time we need it.  What is it for you? What does Mr. Ford's quote mean to you?  How do you connect to it?  As always I invite you to share with me and others your thoughts and ideas about this quote, for there will be many other ideas and thoughts that can help me and others.  It's always great to see someone's thoughts and opinions that can get us thinking differently.  Seeing things from different points of view are always helpful.

“When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.” Willie Nelson

One of the simplest thoughts with some of the biggest payoffs around.   When I saw this quote the other day, not only did I stop and think about it, but then I also put it into play.  There have a been a few sleepless nights lately due to me worrying about things that I really can't control and / or things that haven't even happened yet, and chances are they won't happen.  When I started to focus on the good things I have in my life, most of the worries take a hike.  I tell you this, getting a good night's sleep is not overrated.

I've read it a lot, had this statement  told to me a lot - that we are what we think about.  That sure is the truth.  As I get ready to embark not only on a new school year, but another year as a husband, father, son, friend, teacher, etc.; I know how much better things will be if I have my focused attention on all the countless blessings that I have in my life and not the worries, stresses, low-points, negativity from others, etc.  It does indeed take effort, but it's effort that has a huge payday!

This also helps me to see more positive things in others - especially since many of the others that I am talking about are part of my blessings in my life.  My wife, my kids, my parents and in-laws, my co-workers, my students, my neighbors, my friends, etc.  There is a very peaceful feeling or mind-set when I sit back and think about this.  It's very powerful too as I really get a sense of confidence for myself when I think about this quote from good 'ol Willie.  Willie Nelson sure could sing.  He also knows about life too.

Any thoughts to share? to help others?  Always looking to get feedback to gather more information on these thoughts and topics.  Drop me a note too if you want to.
