Be A Difference Maker For Others - Be The Light For Them!!

5/17/2015

"There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." – Edith Wharton

It has occurred to me over the last few years that one of the best things each of us can do during our lifetime is to help and serve others.  I’ve also been reminded about that with one of my guest speakers that I’ve had speak to my Principles of Leadership classes the last three years.  That guest speaker happens to be a friend of mine along with being my current boss, Dr. Joe DiPonio.  He has told my students that one of the most honorable things we can spend our time doing, is to be of service to others.  I could not agree more.

He mentioned one of his mentors from his high school days was the best example of this and he was a huge difference maker in his life.  I have one of my mentors from my college days that had the same huge impact on me and my life and the lives of thousands of others.  His name was Dr. Wells Cook at Central Michigan University.

Looking back, I’ve always wanted to be that difference maker for my students.  But now it seems I have focused on ramping it up more with what Dr. Cook was all about.  He’s no longer with us as he passed from a battle with cancer just about 10 years ago already.  I think about him often and I look back to everything he did for me and I know it’s the least I can do in honor of him, is for me to get off my butt and start playing BIG in my life instead of playing small.  As I’ve mentioned before, playing small does nobody in the world any good at all.  It comes down to me looking to help more people than just my students.  Spreading the light for me means to invest in people and get them to believe in themselves, just like Dr. Cook did with me.

That is one of my many messages to my seniors this year, invest in others.  Believe in them.  Be the light for them to show them the great possibilities that they have in their life.  Be that difference no matter what you get into in life as you don’t have to be a teacher or a coach in order to make this happen.

So I know I need to continue to ramp up my efforts with my students, my wife and kids and the rest of my family.  I need to do this with my basketball coaching that I’ll be starting to get back in with the girls varsity at our local high school where my kids attended.  I will be trying to volunteer a little more with the other programs my kids were involved with there; the track & cross country programs along with the band program too.  I also need to play bigger with my blog, my podcasts, my videos, getting going on my first book, my coaching programs, continuing to improve with my teaching, more reading, the list is really endless where playing less small would benefit me and so many others.

Ask yourself this – where can I offer more light into other people’s lives?  Where and with who can I be a bigger difference maker?  Where else in my life can I play BIGGER, instead of playing small?  Let me know some of these answers as I would love to learn from you and help you too if I can.

New Year - Keep Your Dreams Alive.... Great Lessons From Stuart Scott And Others - Quote Of The Week

Picture
"Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe." -- Gail Devers

As I have my coffee this morning and I’m watching the sad news about Stuart Scott passing away from his 3 time battle with cancer, I sure shed a few tears I got to be honest.  I never met the man, but I sure did watch and listen to him.  Especially when he got sick and found out about the cancer that he had to fight;  that’s when there were even more lessons for us to learn from him.

There is a key here that ties into the quote I picked out for this week.  We can learn from so many people in so many different areas in our life.  There are those like Stuart that we just see on TV and we listen to them along with reading things about them, there are lessons there for us to learn from.  Obviously this might be easier with people that are around us, that we know and that we can spend time with and talk with.  We need to recognize there lies opportunity to learn in both examples.

As I start off the new year, still recovering from back surgery, I have had a little more time than I normally do to think about a few things.  The dreams that I have, are still there.  They are still there because I really haven’t done much about making them come true.  Gail Devers is right, we have to keep our dreams alive.  The point about having faith in ourselves is huge!  Without that, it’s going to be almost impossible to make those dreams come true.

The belief in ourselves is needed to even get to the part where we have to have the vision, the hard work, the determination and dedication that is needed.  What Stuart Scott did and others are too for me, is to show plenty of examples of that process that they have through all the difficulties and adversities that they face.

My wife and I were just talking about the fact that everyone has difficulties and challenges in their lives, everyone.  We are too.  I had the same discussion with a college friend of mine, a few coworkers, former students, my son, my daughter and even my mom and dad.  We are all going through challenges that we need to focus on getting through and not just focusing on the problems themselves, but getting through them to be able to move on.

When we are able to do this – focus on getting through the challenges, our attitude and effort in doing those things, we are setting examples for others.  Others that know us, talk to us, listen to us pick up on those things; but also to those that simply watch us and may not even say anything to us, they learn from us too.

Don't Limit Yourself, A Few Tips - Quote Of The Week

8/25/2014

"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve." -- Mary Kay Ash

It is totally true that the most valuable 6 inches of space is right between your ears.  When people learn to control their minds, control what goes in and out of their brain, that is when great things can happen.  I’m still constantly working on this fact.  I hope you are always working on it too.

It’s also true that our biggest critic that we will usually ever have to deal with is ourselves.  As I tell my students each and every year at the start of every class I teach, we are with ourselves 24/7.  We can’t get away from ourselves since every night before we go to bed, during our time of sleep and first thing in the morning, there we are again.  We might be able to fool others, but when you think about it, we certainly cannot fool ourselves.  We know when we do something wrong  - others might not know about it, but we do.  Our limiting thoughts and beliefs that we put on ourselves are far worse than what others can put on us.  Now, what others say and do sometimes does add to our own negative thinking about ourselves, that’s why it is vitally important to guard the relationships around us.

So one of our most important things we must always look to do, and for me it’s something I constantly have to remind myself to do; is to always work on our thinking.  We need to control as much as we can as to what goes into our minds.  There are way too many people and things out there that would be glad to control us for their agenda.    If we don’t control our own minds and our own lives, we will have them controlled by someone or something else for sure.  Then we wonder why life get’s so hard and difficult to do things we think we want to do.

Look at what you reading or are you even reading at all?  There are so many factual connections out there in the world that show massive positive results for being a reader.  Leaders are readers is the old saying.  Successful people in all walks of life are many times very avid readers.  Try it and see the changes that will start to appear.  I know I need to monitor more of my time spent watching TV instead of working on the thoughts and ideas that I have.  I also need to be listening to more positive motivational content through audio books, podcasts, etc.

So what are some thing you do to help you think more positively about your life and yourself?  Any success stories out there about some examples of things changing for you or others that you have witnessed when taking this process on?  Always feel free to let me know your thoughts and ideas as I certainly don’t have all the answers and I’m always looking to learn new things that can help me to help myself and others.

Every Day This Happens To So Many People... Quote of the Week!

7/8/2014

“Every day thousands of people bury good ideas because they are afraid to act on them." -David Schwartz

Life continuously seems to give us messages that maybe there are better ways of doing things.  At those moments, we might just come up with ideas on how to do those things better, but then we seem to forget about it, get too busy with other things, think we can’t do that, etc.   It seems so many people today have a common thought about how there has to be a better way of doing things.  This could be for their job or career, an invention or something, improving their relationships with others, or even for doing things around the house.

The keys on these are that the ideas get lost or buried and also most people are indeed afraid to act on those ideas.   Both have happened to me throughout my lifetime and I still am working on fixing this every day.   The ideas get lost or buried for many reasons.  We do seem to be too busy in today’s world with so much going on that we miss out on the opportunities to take the time to think about how we can improve things.

The other part of us not believing we can do things a different way or improve on something also gets in the way.  It comes down to our thinking.  David Schwartz is the author of my favorite book of all time, The Magic of Thinking Big.  He addresses these points and so much more in his book that it is a book that you should put on your reading list as soon as you can.

One of the major keys that has struck me is that I’ve wasted way too much time and not putting some of my ideas into action.  So not only am I working on the fear of things stopping me, along with the fact I’m too scatter-brained so often where I lose sight of things that I need to do; there is that action piece too that has been missing on my end.  With some major things going on this summer and this fall for me, I realize now is the time to get things going.

Is it that time for you too?  With this quote staring at me when I saw it, I know just like the old saying goes – “There’s no time like the present” to do things I know I have to do.  You do realize that quote above and the quote about the present works for you too?  I know you knew that.  I just wanted to remind you like I reminded myself.
