I saw this quote today, but I sure thought of it yesterday.
While out driving in very heavy traffic trying to get a few more things accomplished for Christmas, I caught myself thinking exactly about this thought - especially the peace, goodwill and mercy part. There were a few instances while driving and in the store that I tried to be conscious of others in the mad chaos that seemed to be going on. In the store, letting people go in front of me while looking around, getting out of people's way to let them pass through or to get to the items they were looking at. A well timed smile at a few people that looked like they needed to see one. A few even smiled back at me.
The big example came when I was driving. There was a long line of traffic and we were all inching our way to the traffic light when out of nowhere, this white van passed everyone on the right and merged his way right in front of me. At first I started to voice my displeasure at him (much like I do at the TV sometimes... hehehe) and I put my arms up as to say "what the heck are you doing?", hoping he would see me in his mirror. Then I thought about this idea of this quote - and I said to him in a loud voice - "Merry Christmas buddy!" I smiled and turned up the Christmas music I was listening to.
He went on his way in a different direction than mine and I just got back to the conscious thought about not being upset and being at peace to enjoy this time of the year. I hope that fella got to where he was going. I enjoyed the rest of my errands - got things done and I am now sitting here enjoying a cup of coffee in one of my holiday mugs. The sun is coming in the windows, the kids are still in bed, so I'm enjoying the quiet sounds of some traditional Christmas holiday tunes on the music channels on TV. I got a few more things to wrap this morning, along with a few chores around the house so we can enjoy our time with family over the next couple of days. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family. Let's see if we can take what President Coolidge to heart and try and celebrate these ideals all year long.
