I’ve been hearing this message a few times recently from a couple of different pod-casts that I listen to along with some Leadership presentations in my classes. Now understand, I’ve heard this message many times before but for some reason it has stuck out more to me recently probably because I’ve been playing too small lately. I’m seeing that fact now that I’m also working towards expanding my comfort zone too, because that’s what I know I have to do in order to make the changes necessary for me doing the things I have to get done. My age also has something to do with it – as I’m now 49 and there are things that are becoming clearer to me that I want to work on and get involved in.
One of them is to get back to coaching girls basketball at the high school level. Now of course I have a couple of options here as to where I could do this and I hope to have it finalized soon. I’ve been involved with coaching mainly girls basketball since around 1982. I got my start with coaching with my dad in our CYO league coaching middle school girls basketball. So on top of coaching, I’ve also been involved with doing stats, broadcasting games on our local cable channel for our girls Varsity games the last few years. So counting those years, I’ve been around the great game of basketball for around 30 years. There is passion there as I love the game and I really enjoy promoting the girls that play that great sport.
I’ve finally moved ahead with my podcasts and keeping my blogs going too. I’ve been playing small in those areas for too long now. I know two of my friends and mentors probably have been scratching their heads as to how much longer I would go, in not working harder and doing more in these areas. One key element about those 2 mentors of mine, they never gave up on me. They’ve always been encouraging me over the years along with always letting me know that they are there for me too – it’s just up to me to get going with the things we have always talked about.
I’m trying to do other things too, much bigger than what I have been doing in the past. I’m looking forward to this summer with some of the many things I want to get done, I’m looking forward to having the time and hopefully the drive and focus to get things done. I have had many items on my “to-do” list from many years ago that just simply don’t get done, heck they don’t even get started most years.
Time to be different. Time for different results. Time to live big. What will it be for you?
