Time Is The Most Valuable Item We Have

"Time properly invested is worth a fortune; time wasted can be devastation." Jim Rohn

As I sit here at the car dealership on a Monday morning waiting for service to be done on my car, this was the first quote that I saw.  Of course, as usual, I sure needed to see it.  Truth be told, I have struggled with this concept for most of my life.   Without seeing this quote, I know that I have to deal with this.  After seeing this quote, I know I have to ramp it up as I know I've not been making this the priority that it needs to be.

Too many examples about how fast time is going by that make this point even more powerful and necessary for me to take on.  Another key is that I know you also have too many examples, some that you have already thought of as you saw this quote.  The question is what are we going to do about it?

For me the pain of staying the same is hurting more than the pain of me changing, and that fact is not only pushing me to tears at times, but it is becoming more necessary than ever before.  The examples in my life about how fast time is flying by, these have a huge part to do with it.  I'm sure it is the same with yours too.  Another factor in the pain meter for me is how many people in my life that are also hurting that I could maybe help out a little if I start making the changes I need to make.  Between my wife and kids, to other family members, my students, my fellow teachers, my basketball players and coaches I work with, other friends, the list goes on and on and on.

This also hammers home the point about how time seems to become more valuable as you get older.  Really time should be viewed as being very valuable at any age.  It’s the one factor of life that is truly the most valuable commodity that we have.  Some say it’s money, but we can always make more money, cut expenses, etc., but we can’t manufacture more time.  Our 24 hour days are the same for each of us, even for the richest person in the world, it’s just they use their time a little bit differently than the rest of us.

As I finish this up late this week, this is one of many focus points that I need to take more time to work on… get it??  There have been a few distractions that went on this week where I was unable to even sit down to finish up my blog, but it’s all good as those things that came up were things that matter to me as they dealt with my wife and kids and the things we had to get done.  So to me, that was time well spent.  So, take a few minutes to think about what you are spending your time on?

"Pay attention. Don’t just stagger through the day." -- Jim Rohn

This is one thing I've tried to do myself and try to get my own kids along with my students to focus on.  Paying attention in life has it's ways of paying dividends and I think that for many of, we don't do this nearly enough.

I know for a fact that I have staggered through many days in my life without paying too much attention.  Sure wish I could have a "re-do" or as we called it as kids a "do-over" - but I sure can learn from those times, that's for sure.  There are so many days that all we feel like doing is to just get through the day - but if we spend just a few moments at the start of the day to get into that frame of mind of paying attention to what's going on - you never know what we will find.

I've started the last few weeks getting up in the morning and spending a few moments reading some type of devotional, scripture, goal setting, leadership, success passage, etc.  It really has set my day off in a better direction and I know I need to continue that every day.

What are things that you can do to help you in this area?  Paying attention to things day in and day out is so valuable to you and your life direction.  I think it helps us to focus on the things that we know will help us go after those goals and dreams in our lives.  So first - we need to have those goals and dreams of course.   What else can we do to have this be a great benefit to us? Pay attention to those things, share them with me and others and that way it will help you focus on them too.

“The goal in life is not to live forever, the goal in life is to create something that does.” – John Maxwell

John Maxwell always has great thoughts.  This is one of the many that I enjoy reading about.  I guess as I get closer and closer to 50 years old - still a couple of  years away - I get to thinking about the bigger picture about what is life all about.  This idea that he brings out, should get all of us thinking.  As usual with many success and leadership principles, the earlier you think about some of these things, and then start to implement them into your life, the better off you can be.

Everyone should understand that we can't live forever.  But John Maxwell is correct in getting us to think about creating things that do go on and on, even after we are gone.  It could be a book, articles, or other writings that we might produce that will be around for a long time.  It could be an invention maybe or even starting up a business that goes beyond our years.  But I tend to view this as the investments that we can make into other people that are the best things we can create that will last longer than we will.

The investments that we make in our own children that will pass onto others.  The way we treat and interact with others; both in and outside of our families will carry on after we are gone.  The example on how we lead our lives, do get picked up and noticed by others.  If we are leading our lives with positive examples - those will be remembered and used by others, which in turn will be picked up by others.  If it's the other way around, then others will use our not-so-positive examples in their lives and affect others with them.

Any thoughts?  Are you on your way to creating something that will last beyond your years?

“What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise” - Oscar Wilde

We all have issues going on in our lives.  It seems now a day that so many people are having more issues in their lives that they must deal with. From money problems, the poor economy, the negative news around the country and around the world, in the media; there is no wonder the mood seems to be sad and depressing at times.

But what about if we took a step back and took a deep breath and tried to look at each issue by itself instead of one big jumbled mess.  The things that I’ve been working on, I’ve tried to do just that.  I’m trying to ask myself, “What can I do about that?”  It’s always good to try and deal with things that we can actually do something about. It’s taken me a long time to realize that fact, and to tell you the truth, I still need to be reminded about it all the time it seems. Worrying really doesn't do any good at all.   I've found that if I deal with things that I can control, I feel much better about all the things going on in my life.

I've also began to see that there is opportunity in these bitter trials.  Mostly it’s the opportunity for me to get better.  While others may blame, criticize and condemn others for their situations; I’m trying to learn to look for the chances for me to get better and to improve the situation that I find myself in.  Does it work all the time? No way, but it’s getting better. There are usually things that come out of tough times that make us better in the long run.  That involves having patience and the ability to actually do something about the situations that we find ourselves in.  It’s a long process sometimes and we have to remember that life is indeed a journey and there are many things that happen along that journey.

Any insights?  Any thoughts?  Ideas?  Always looking to learn from others – and I know others are looking to learn from you too. Go on… be a difference maker by offering your ideas to help yourself, me and others.

Are You Investing in Yourself?

Picture
Am I investing in myself?  A good question to ask myself.

This is one question that we seem not to ask ourselves too often.  During the summer, it’s a perfect time to find a little relaxing time to do just that.

Recently I was listening to one of my many audio books from John Maxwell and this exact question came up in one of his discussions.

There are so many different investments now a day.  Stocks, bonds, real estate, mutual funds, etc; the list goes on and on for possible investments.

We need to make investing in ourselves a top priority.

Maxwell said that we basically cannot invest in other people unless we first invest in ourselves.   A very true statement for sure that the sooner we realize is true, the better off we will be.

Part of the whole process of investing in ourselves is to clear the path to connect with ourselves.

What I mean is that if you are like me, there are issues that you have to “fix” before we can really maximize our investment into ourselves.

Please feel free to start working on these things before I did.  I waited until I was in my mid 30’s and now I’m 46 and I am still working on things I know that I should have fixed already.

Take a look at my Top 25 book list on my website as that might be a good place to start to find some things that might give you some insights as to how to start this most important investment.

Then start out slow, maybe a book every month or two is a good start.  I’m thinking about some things that I can do to help those of you that want to try and get into reading some books to help in this area.

As always.. please let me know your thoughts as I’m always interested in learning from others along with trying to help others too.

Invest now? Are you crazy??

8/10/2011

Invest in these crazy times?  Are you nuts?

So many things are happening with the economy lately, not just in the U.S. but around the world too.

It’s enough to make us want to not invest money into stocks for sure.

How about the banks, they are safe right?

Some are, but not a great return on your investment right now.

I’ve said it before.

And I’m saying it again.

It’s always a great time to invest in YOURSELF.

In fact not only is always a great time to invest in yourself, it’s a must that you invest in yourself.

Here’s a big reason why.

Nobody else will do it.

Here’s another big reason to do it.

Not many people invest in themselves.

You want to make yourself to be able to keep moving forward, keep getting better, keep learning, etc., no matter what is going on in the world.

By understanding those two points we can really move ahead of ourselves and most other people by acting on those two points.

It’s actually a very good insurance policy for yourself too.

One of the best ways to do it is to, just as the great Bob Proctor says “we need to turn off the radio, turn off the t.v. and get into a darn good book”.

Good books include books that make us better, that get us to see what we can do with our limited time that we really have.

They get us to think differently and then to start making the changes in our life that we must do in order to go in the direction that we want to go in.

It can be any type of different information that gets you going in a positive direction towards where you want to go.

Do your homework.

Think about one thing that you know you need to get better at.  Or the direction you want your life to go.

Find some time to learn the thing or things that will help you in that area.

Just try it and see what happens.

Now is the time my friend to invest in yourself like no other time in history.

Any thoughts or questions on this, please, let’s talk about it and see what happens.
