There Is Power In Our Present By Having Hope In Our Future!

“If there is hope in the future, there’s power in the present.” – John Maxwell

As I was at the gym over the weekend, I was listening to my usual podcasts while I was there.  From Zig Ziglar’s podcast there was something that struck me as connecting  with me right now.  There are most day and most time throughout each day that I do have hope in the future and John Maxwell is right on – that does make me feel there is power that I have in the present.

There are also those few times where I don’t feel very hopeful about the future and I do feel less powerful, less confident, more negative, more down, etc., towards the present moment.  But I also have remembered that I cannot stay in that feeling for very long.  I’ve made a conscious choice in the past that when these sad, negative, down feelings take over, I first tell myself that they will not last and then second, I try and put myself right into the middle of those feelings.  I want to wrap my arms around them, and almost taste what those negative feelings are all about.  Knowing that the quicker I can connect with them, the quicker I can learn and make adjustments from them along with quickly moving on towards feeling better and moving forward.

Looking back throughout my life there have been plenty of moments that I stayed stuck in them and thereby giving up control to those negative, sad, depressing feelings.  I have learned (through reading a few books, listening to some podcasts, etc., that I need to get connected with those sad, hopeless feelings and thoughts to be able to dissect them, learn from them and become better and move on.  When those feeling hit me, I’m not feeling too hopeful about the future and that robs me of my today.  I am working hard at not letting that happen.

John Maxwell also mentions about the size of our hope will determine how far we go in life.  From these episodes that I have been through, I totally agree with that idea.  As Kevin Miller puts it – “You need more hope.  You need to increase it and enhance it and establish it.”  We all need more hope for sure.  We do need to increase it and establish more of it in our lives and in the lives of those that are around us.  That is a very powerful and life-changing thought.  The more we can have hope for others, the more they can have it for themselves.  There are so many people around us that are looking for an example of finding hope in themselves.  Sometimes it’s up to us to have faith in a person, believe in them, stick with them and thereby transferring our hope in them into themselves where they can latch onto to it and start believing in themselves and thereby changing their futures and those people around them.

I find it so awesome and inspiring the ideas and thoughts that can come to me with a cup of coffee, some fresh air coming in the house next to where I’m sitting, time relaxing and focusing in on a thought (or in this case a quote), and then all the ideas that come rushing into my head during this time of solitude.  Just another thought – maybe you can try it out for yourself?   As always, let me know how it goes.

We Only Have One Life To Live - It's Up To Us To Get It Right!

"You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough." – Mae West

This is one thing that I think most people understand about life.  Or at least if you didn’t, you should.  We truly need to understand the fact that we don’t get out of this life alive!  Mae is right, if we do it right, once will indeed be enough.

Throughout our lives there are so many things that happen that affect us and our future.  From the decisions our parents make when we are little and can’t decide things for ourselves, to those that we make as we get older.  Those choices and decisions, both major and minor, affect not just us but it also affects those around us too.

We need to remember that since we only get one shot at life here on earth, we need to do some things differently in order to do it right.  Life is the school that we are in and everyday is the classroom.  There comes a simple yet very important fact about the need for us to learn everyday in life.  There are constant lessons that help guide us along the way of trying to live this one life that we have in the correct way.

Everyone has different views of how to “do it right.”  That is both the beautiful and harsh thing about life is that it’s up to us.  There is no manual that we have to follow page by page.   But if there were, here would be a couple of the chapters in that book (in my case it would be the book on life for dummies) J

One would have to be about the fact that our lives are up to us to live.  We have the total responsibility on how to live our lives, what direction we want to go in, the thoughts and ideas that come into our heads, and definitely the action needed to do things is totally up to us.  The fact that we need to guard our thoughts and ideas that come into our minds is a crucial one.  It has been said that the most valuable space in the world is the six inches between our ears.  Yet most people, including me, don’t guard and protect that half a foot of space enough.  It’s never too late to post a guard to the entrance of our minds along with realizing the power of the things that go on in between our ears that affect our entire life.

Another chapter for sure would have to be about other people.  How important it is to have good people around us that help us throughout life instead of hinder and cause problems for us throughout life.  Who we hang out with directly affects those thoughts and ideas that get into our heads for sure.  But we also need to love people where they are at and understand they too are on their own path in their lives.  They too struggle with things as we all have those struggles and issues that we must deal with for sure every day in our lives.  This does not mean that we should let their issues and problems get in the way of our journey that we must continue on.  Doesn’t mean we can’t try and help them, be there for them, listen to them, etc., but we cannot let others negatively affect us in going in the direction that we know we must go towards.

Obviously there would be many more chapters and the cool thing is there are those chapters that we are in charge of writing in our own book of our own lives.  What is your book all about?  What direction are you heading in? What are you going after in your days that you have left?  Listen to my podcast and I will tell you more of what I’m going after along with hopefully helping you figure out what you are going after in your life.  Always let me know any thoughts and ideas that you have that can help others, including me on this journey we are all on together.

We All Have To Have Confidence and Hope In Our Lives

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." - Helen Keller

As I sit here with my (you guessed it) first cup of coffee, I’m listening to the rain and I’m thinking about many things.  Most of the things I’m thinking about  (my wife and family, my basketball coaches and players that I’m blessed to be working with, what I’m calling “the summer of change”, the books I want to read, and how thankful I am for this cup of coffee among many other things), I get a very contagious feeling of hope and peacefulness.

I’ve always tried to have an optimistic attitude or outlook in my life.  There are many times where this is difficult and challenging, but I always strive to get back to having this type of outlook.  I do know for sure that Helen Keller was correct in that things cannot be accomplished without hope and confidence.  At least anything that matters.

Having an optimistic attitude or outlook in life is a lot easier for us when we are doing things that are connected to our heart and have passion for.  It also connects with the people that we have in our lives as we need others to help encourage us, love us where we are at, support us, listen to us along with us doing the same for them.  This helps instill faith in ourselves that we can achieve things we want to do.   If we don’t have all these pieces to the puzzle, things get a little bit more difficult and that at times will lead to not having hope or confidence in ourselves and in our situations that we live in.

This comes back to the start, the foundation that we have to have to work on setting the table so to speak, for ourselves to have this optimism in our lives.  We have to reach down inside of ourselves and find out what are the things that light us on fire!  What are the things that we get fired up and make us want to go after certain things in life?  We need to be conscious of the thoughts, information and ideas coming into our minds along with finding and keeping those people in our lives that help us and that we are able to help too.

Start today by looking at this quote and figure out what feeds into this optimism in our lives.  Then look at what are the things in your heart that you know you want to accomplish and go after.  Is what you do, day in and day out, helping you have more hope and confidence in your life?  Or are those things pointing to not having hope and no confidence in your life?  Figure out just one change today that you can make to start feeling better about things.  Then keep working on that one thing as you identify one other thing, then another, and another and so on.  Just keep working on one thing and keep it going as those will lead to other things to work on and improve and then just watch the changes that start to happen.

What’s one thing for you to start on right now?  One thing for me – to start reading more books, more articles, etc.  Another quick one for me is to put more action into my days of doing the things that I have to do to make things happen.  Anything that can help make me better, I have to do.  Share yours as I bet it might help someone else out too.

What We Have Inside Us Point Us To Our Future Path

"What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you." – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The ideas inside of us are what will be coming in our future – along with the thoughts, ideas and experiences we have had in our past – those help us form the thoughts and ideas today that will be potentially there in our future.  It’s up to us to act on those and start making them happen.

I think I have put too much weight (at times) on things that have happened to me from my past.  Instead, I know now that I should be internalizing those thoughts into action now for a very bright future.  The things that lie ahead of us without our action to add to it are really nothing.  What lies in front of us in the future – it needs us to be a major part in that – we are the ones that only can make it happen.  What’s inside of us is that magic that will take the things in front of us and add life to it.

Pam, who is a friend of mine saw this quote and mentioned “I totally agree...I think what is inside you determines what lies in front of you.” I think she is totally right.   In fact since we have control of what is inside of ourselves, we have total control of those things that are in our future.  Now, we are not in control of things that will happen to us, things that happen in the world that affect us, along with not being in control of others that will affect us.  You know what’s coming next – we are in total control of how we respond to all those things that happen to us.

So knowing that what’s inside us is what helps bring clarity to our futures, why not set out today to begin working on the things that are inside of us??  I know it’s something that I need to continue to work on throughout my life.  There are so many ways to do that – reading, changing our thinking, fixing bad habits, strengthening body, mind, soul along with improving and strengthening our relationships too.

Another big thing I think is to really try and figure out where your heart is at with what you want to do with your life.  The sooner you ask this the better you, your future, your loved ones, and everyone you come into contact with will be better.  As soon as we start working on these things, our present and our future will start opening up with more opportunities.   What are some things we can do right now in these areas and others too?  I know what I’m working on – do you?  I just know I have to do more.

Change Is Mandatory In Life - Change Happens No Matter What.

“Unless you change how you are, you'll always have what you've got.” – Jim Rohn

Lot’s happening these past few days.  We had graduation at Lake Shore High School for the Class of 2015 and I was blessed enough to be asked to deliver the commencement address. It was such a humbling and fabulous experience.  I want to make sure the Class of 2015 knows how much I appreciate them having me share their special day with them.

This thought by the great Jim Rohn above is one of the things I am focusing on in my life right now and that is I’m looking to change for the better.  I need to continue on this journey of getting out of my comfort zone.  I need to keep working hard to learn new skills and to play bigger in my life.  Getting out in front of over 2000 people to give that speech on Saturday at gradation was a big step for me.  I am totally comfortable in a classroom in front of 30 teenagers, but Saturday was such a rush!  It was a great feeling to look around and see all of those people.  I practiced that speech many times with the vision of being at that podium, on that stage, in the gym along with all of those people in the crowd.  I had to change and expand my comfort zone in my mind before I did it for real.

I think about this quote and I know if I stay where I’m at and not change, not only will I not go any farther in my life, but also I will begin to lose things that I currently have.  I would not meet new people along with not learning new skills.  The people that I currently know would be slowly start going places and I would be staying behind.  The skills that I would possess already would slowly get rusty by me not improving them.  My current relationships with those that I love and care about would also suffer and slowly start disappearing with me staying the same, not wanting to do new things, invest in the relationships any more, all of those would really suffer.  This game of life is constant in change.  From the weather, to economics, to the stock market, to the sports teams, to us simply getting older, and the list goes on and on.

I’ve used this example with all my students over the years.  I have yet to find a student who comes into my classes letting me and everyone know they want to get worse in life.    They have all wanted to at least get by and get through high school.  Plus, we all have to realize that it takes time to realize we need to change along with it taking up our entire lives to keep working at changing for the better.  Change is definitely an inside job that takes a lifetime to work on and do.

There is also an old saying about when we look at all the things we want to change, the list looks overwhelming.  But if we can just focus a little at a time, just 1% improvement a day, in any of the areas we need to work on – the difference after a month will be incredible.   How about 6 months?  How about after a year of just improving 1% a day?  Just let that one sink in there a little bit.  Any thoughts?
