No Reserves. No Retreat. No Regrets

Here is another lesson that I recently got from John O'Leary's book, "In Awe" and he brought up this thought of No Reserves.  No retreat.  No regrets.  He mentions this mindset from a story of William Borden (click on his name for his amazing story.)

No Reserves

This was a reminder to Borden to make sure he was taking everything he had, all of his gifts, all of his thoughts & insights of things, all of his kindness & compassion; and to put it all out there for being a difference maker to others.  To really be a light for someone else's darkness.  I take this as Sam Crowley always says, to use up all the toothpaste in our tube of what our lives are.  Not to be on our deathbed with things still left undone, unsaid to others and things not tried.  It's something that has been on my mind more and more in my own life.  (that's why this post hit close to home for me.)

No Retreat

Borden wrote of this as to not go back home to an easier life, one with money, priviledge, etc.  He found strength in that to help keep him focused on what his mission in life was.  This reminds me to not retreat back to an easy life.  Remember, looking to make things easy now, in our early life - it will make things much more difficult later in life.  We need to reverse this.  Work hard now in our lives, things will be difficult and challenging, but later in life, it will get better.  Everything I now do are grounded in the fact that I'm proud of being a teacher and a coach and I know that I have made a difference with so many people and look to continue to do so.   No retreat from being an educator.

No Regrets

This one ties it all in.  John O'Leary wrote "don't get to the end of your journey and realize the life you lived was not yours.  Don't forget that you are free to choose.  Right now."  We all have THE CHOICE for how we live our lives.  If we don't like where we are going or where we are at, we can change things in our own life.  We can think differently, we can make different choices, we can choose to get better.   This also brings in the fact of (at least to me) how we can't continue to blame others or blame the circumstances that happen to us.

Unfortunately in today's times, I see this happening way too much and to tell you that I don't want to be a part of that way of thinking.  I think the blame game that so many people are playing is a direct recipe to have plenty of regrets in life, to retreat from things that will help us in the long run, and to have tons of reserves in our tank when we die.  Not taking responsibility for our own lives will lead to the opposite of all three of these.   Bottom line, I'm looking to take control of my life in these 3 areas.  For example (as so many people are getting worked up about this) I'm not going to let any elected official be the difference maker in my life.  Doesn't matter who is in any elected position in any form of our government as to how I choose to live my life and that I need to make sure that I follow this formula:  No reserves.  No retreat.  No regret.  How about you?

Wow... what a productive morning today!!  I got up with my cup of coffee and our dog sitting on my lap as I finished up another book - "The Bottom of The Pool" by Andy Andrews.   What a fabulous book and I knew it would be since I listened to Andy Andrews on 3 different podcasts - 2 as a guest on Brian Buffini's Podcast and the other was on John O'Leary's podcast.  The third one of course was on Andy's own podcast - "The Professional Noticer".   The discussions I heard about this book sold me on getting a copy.

His book really got me thinking about my thinking!  It's everything to me as my thinking affects every thing in my life.  You might say duh... that's not a surprise at all.  But to hear it from him, to read it in the words that he shared so many stories about this - WOW was all I could say after reading it.  That is a book that you want to make sure you get your hands on for sure.

I also watched a video clip this morning sent to me by a good friend, Stan Targosz.  He sent it to Dr. Jeff Lip too as the 3 of us had a fabulous meeting this past week in recording a podcast for Jeff's show - again, a must listen to... find it (after August 12, 2019)  and all of his podcasts at www.jefflip.com -  We had some FANTASTIC and POWERFUL discussion both before and after the show.  I walked out of there very excited and fired up about things in my life.  A product  that usually comes from hanging out with awesome people like Stan and Jeff.

Finally, I got to work out this morning - which I'm back on my schedule of every other day getting to the gym.  That also allows me to listen to some great podcasts, do some awesome thinking, and always walking out of there feeling better about life and myself.    This morning was no different.   Scott Smith (The Daily Boost podcast), https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/motivationtomovecom/daily-boost  mentioned about that it's time to become the person you have always wanted to be.  To start doing the things that you need to do in order to start making that happen.  The little things matter for sure.  Changing habits matter.  Our thinking matters.  Action steps matter!  Again, this is something that I know  has to happen, but for many reasons (my excuses) they have not happened.  Amazing to get re-connected with this again.  I needed to hear it!

"Dr. Ron's Words of Wisdom"  (https://drronblake.com/welcome-to-dr-rons-words-of-wisdom/) was another podcast that I got to listen to, with help of Sam Crowley.  Dr. Ron mentioned that "only the prepared are in a position to change directions".  Again, total truth that needed to find it's way into my mind & heart.   Taking the action steps, changing my habits, doing little things that become big things!

What a great way to start my day and hope you use this to help yourself out a little.

Purpose, Passion & Education

I was listening to a couple of great podcasts today - I find so much value from Sam Crowley and John O'Leary.  These are just two of the podcasts that I listen to out of maybe 12 -15 that I find so much key & valuable information.

Sam always hammers home the points about Purpose & Passion.  He's got it right in understanding that we don't have a ton of time here on earth, and we shouldn't spend it chasing after the wrong things.   Sure we need to have money, but it should not mean that we have to settle for things throughout life.   I think all of us at one point or time in our lives think about things that could be if we every chose to go after things that fire us up.  Most of those dreas and goals start disappearing as we get older.  We get comfortable & content with things the way they are.  We get tired as we get older.  Life starts happening to us and things get in the way.  It sure is easy to kind of let go of those dreams or at least put them on the back burner.  Amazing things start happening when we move them to the front burner and start believing that we can actually start doing some things that may make them happen.

Now, John O'Leary also speaks about finding our Passion & Purpose in our lives and all of his guests will back that up.  Heck, even his best selling book, "On Fire" is all about people with passion & purpose in their lives.   But today's guest was Hill Harper a famous actor who brought up how important education is in our lives.  Not just a degree or diploma, but true education that makes us a better human being.  Finding the connection to what we are meant to do alon with investing in ourselves so that our lives deal with making a difference with others.

Like I said, these two podcasts really connected with me and I think they will connect with you too.  They inspire me to think harder about what I want to do in my life and they remind me not only the importance of making choices that match with my purpose & passions in my life along with looking to make a difference with others.

"Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do."  - Oprah Winfrey

I've pointed at this quote many times this week to my students and to remind myself too on how important it really is to put the work in now and make things easier later.  It's funny that the lessons I share with students, many times I need those same lessons - and even more than my students do sometimes.  Take today for example - Friday, Oct. 19, 2018 - as I write these thoughts down, I'm tired!!  I know I need to stop at the gym today after work and I also know I won't feel like it at all!  But I know I have to do it, for my health, for feeling better today, and even for sleeping better tonight.

I was listening to a podcast this morning from my buddy Sam Crowley - he was talking about making decisions which lead to action.  Listen to his podcast episode HERE.    He brought up so many great points of information that I needed to hear.  One of the biggest was that inaction, not doing something is also a decision.  That type of decision doesn't lead to much else other than regret, pain, the fact that the thing you didn't do is still there to be done, it causes worry and more stress too.    So as I was listening to that this morning, I knew that one of my big battles today was going to be this decision that I know I need to do.  You will find out about if I'm successful at this, later today when I will do a Facebook Live - catch it on my FB page HERE.  If you read this after today - look for the video from 10-19-18.

What decision or choice should you make today?

Today Has Two Different Meanings...

"Today is the oldest you've ever been, and the youngest you'll ever be again. So live life to the fullest today, and have no regrets." #SayQuotable

There are things that we hear every day of our lives.  Some of them we actually listen to and some of them we take an extra step and we actually think about too.   When I saw this one, I had to read it again and then I also made it my last quote of the week for the school year for my students.

There is one more step on things like this.  After the thinking part of it – and of course it’s the most important part, it’s doing something about the statement.  The thing is that this statement rings true every day.  Then as the days go by we forget to live every day to the fullest and suddenly so much time has gone by that we tend to just fall into the motions of things we always do.  As Brian Buffini has said – “The days are long and the years are short.”    Years that go by tend to blend into one another and it gets harder and harder to remember them.

To be honest, this is something that I have always struggled with.  I’m trying to not live with regrets and I suppose I’m doing a better job than before, but wasting time and not living each day to the fullest is something that I continue struggle with.  But then in that same moment that I think about that statement, I have another thought – and that is that I won’t stop trying to make this better.  I won’t stop trying to live each day to the fullest and to the best that I can.

During a visit to Cincinnati, Ohio June 8 -10, I went to Sam Crowley’s live event.  This exact topic was heavy in our discussions.  Sam helped us all out by assigning a little homework to bring with us.  He wanted us to put down our Why’s on a notecard.  Why are we trying to do what we do? What are the reasons that are pushing us to be different, to try different things, and to get out of comfort zone.  We all shared those Why cards and it was powerful for sure.   For sure it helped that we got up in front of people to share our stories, but the real difference maker for all of us I think was to hear the other stories from everyone there.  It helped our whys to listen to the others that were there.  I think it helped to make our why’s stronger for ourselves based upon the connections we made with the other people there.

Besides the connection that my family has as part of my why, another is what Les Brown talks about on how valuable the graveyard is.  It’s the place where so many ideas, dreams, thoughts, etc., die with the people who never acted on them, never tried – I do not want that to be me.  I need to work on that every day so that I won’t take them all with me when it’s my time.

Now that we all have these new connections coming out of the event, there has been a lot of action being taken by people in our group.  I know that I have done more and plan on doing more just because of the people I met during that event.  Reading a statement like the one above is good.  Doing something with it is better.  To have other people helping you to do that, that’s more than you can do with it yourself.  That’s the power of making the most out of every day, when it’s bigger than just you.  Our Why’s – the reason we get up every day to go and do whatever we have to do – it’s important to know those reasons why.  It’s important to connect them to the people in our lives as I think that multiplies the power that those reasons can have with us.

One more key – we help those people that are part of our why’s by going out and doing great things.  They see us doing those things and they too can realize they can do great things too.  It’s not just about us – Life is about those connections we have with others.  Those are the real why’s we do what we do.  Have you looked at your why’s?  Why do you do what you do?  Is there more to your why’s than just yourself?  A great challenge for all of us is to look at that statement often to see where we stand with our why’s in life.  I know I need to do it every day.  Challenge yourself right now.  Go back up to the top and read that statement again – copy it so you can see it every day and then think about your why’s.  Anyone want to share their why?

It's All About FOCUS!

“Our eyes only see and our ears only hear what our brain is looking for.”  —Dan Sullivan

This past basketball season I shared a thought that I read about with our team.  In a conversation with Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, I read that the one word that was most important for success of any kind was FOCUS.

It has always been a problem area for me (heck, as I write this I was doing 3 other things as this came to my head that I had to get it done.)  LOL…  I figured I would focus on getting these thoughts out there and then go back to finish up the other things.   I’ve jumped to other things in the middle of these thoughts – it’s obvious that I need to work on this for sure.

Our coaching staff would constantly bring this fact up about our team – most teams – tends to lose their focus during a game. This article, this idea I brought up to our team part way during the season.  It helped a little it, but I know that I need to develop some things that our girls can start working on this and other “mind drills” during the off-season for us to be using them all year long.   The great thing about this is that I get to use it too and I know I need it probably more than my team does. ;-)

I went to Cincinnati this past couple of days for an event put on by Sam Crowley.  It was FANTASTIC!  I heard this thought from the presenters – the importance of our mindset being a main piece of whatever success we want to have in our lives.  I listened to a podcast – twice and I’ll listen again a couple of times too – all from Brian Buffini on the importance of a made-up mind!   It’s obvious that this is something that not only I need to work on but we all do.  The examples and evidence are out there – with so many of them available for us to learn from.

What we focus on, what we spend our time thinking about, what we put into our minds – all of it affects every single thing we do in our lives.   One of the many problems is that there is so much information out there coming at us through our eyes and into our ears, that our brains are overloaded for sure.  That’s where when we realize that we have a say as to what information goes into our heads – we can start choosing what we let into our brains.

Since we don’t have all the time in the world – or at least as much as we think we do, working on this skill of focusing on what we let into our heads is something we all need to work on as soon as we can.  For me, that time is now.    I’ve said that so many times during my life, now it’s again time for me to do something about it.    I have figured out a long time ago that things like this that I share with my students and basketball players – I need to follow them too.  What about you?

Following Your Dream Is Tough - But It's Even Tougher If Don't.

8/29/2016

"It's difficult to follow your dream.  It's a tragedy not to." - Sam Crowley

I've heard over and over again how difficult things are that are worth it or important.  Our dreams fall into that category for sure.  Things that are worthwhile in life usually don't come easy.  That's what makes the so worthwhile to us.

Sam has been right on target with his insights ever since I started listening to him and following him almost 7 years ago. This one is no exception.

The tragedy part is the thing that is connecting with me more and more recently.  One part has to do with me not putting in the effort to get things going on my dreams.  The time that has gone by in my life.  The fact that I have not believed in myself like I should have along with the fact that I probably have more yesterdays that I have tomorrows.

Two instances recently have helped to drive this quote home too.  My father-in-law just turned 80 this month.  We had a big family party.  He really enjoyed his day, especially his birthday cake. The thing is, he's battling a number of health issues and it's difficult to see my wife and her siblings handle all of this that is going on.  It's equally difficult watching my mother-in-law go through a less severe health issue that is keeping her from getting around temporarily along with trying to be there to help her husband.  I think about all the dreams and goals that he has had during his lifetime.  He's a career educator being a high school teacher and counselor.  I know for a fact that he made a HUGE difference with many people throughout his career.

The other instance was while I was visiting my father-in-law in the hospital, he had a roommate in his room for a few days.  This man was 90 years old and I listened to him tell stories and give advice to his many visitors the couple of times I was there.  This guy was a spark-plug with having his mind in tact along with I could tell he lead a good life so far with all the stories tied into leadership, success and life principles.

On my recent visit, my mother-in-law was talking to him as I guess she talked with him and his wife a lot since she spent most of her days there.  This time I got up the guts to say something to this man.  To wish him well along with thanking him for the lessons learned in overhearing his conversations while sitting there.  He had a big smile on his face.  He held out his hand when I introduced myself to him.  He asked what I did and I told him I was a high school business teacher.  He smiled even more.  He said he could tell that I liked what I did along with being good at it. (I humbly thanked him)  He worked as a controller for some major companies in his lifetime – something I picked up during his conversations with others.

He told me a couple of things. One was to always use two words in life with others – Thank You! He said having a grateful and thankful heart was a key to life.  He also gave me two book titles to read and I wrote them down and I told him I would get these books and read them.  One was "The Boys in the Boat" - dealing with 9 Americans and their quest for Gold in the 1936 Olympics. The other book was "Team of Rivals" that was about the political genius of Abraham Lincoln.  This man told me that he knew he was on his way out but that he had a few things to tell people first. My wife was there a few times too and she told me that he was thanking everyone that came to visit him for their friendship and kindness throughout his life.

When I picked up my mother-in-law at the hospital the other evening, I saw her talking to this man's wife and they were hugging.  He had just died an hour or so before that evening.  I could see both the sadness and relief in the woman's eyes. But it also made me remember the quick conversation I had with him just two days before.  I thought about the changes that I have to make in my life.  I thought about how this man seemed to have gone after many of his dreams and goals, but I also wondered about those that he didn't, and how that made him feel here at the end of his life. I also thought about things Sam has been saying for all the years I've been listening to him.    They are both right and I need to do some things now that I've been putting off for far too long.  I am very thankful for both of these fellas and the lessons that I've learned.  Do these lessons connect with you too I hope?

Distance Yourself From Negativity And Watch What Happens!

“Beautiful things happen when you distance yourself from negativity” – Zig Ziglar

I got caught.  I was listening to Zig Ziglar’s podcasts the other day and something connected with me about the importance of being positive.  Then Zig caught me checking out Facebook and there was this quote of his that popped up.  It connected right away with me.

I think this is one of the most important things we can spend our time focusing on in our lives.  I’ve tried hard over the years to have myself stay away from negative things and thinking.  There have been times I’ve been successful and other times quite the opposite.  Negativity takes away from so many things in our lives.  I’ve seen it happen over and over again.  From our health, to our relationships, to our thinking, to everything – negativity affects it all.  The same can be said for being positive.  It all starts with us taking the time to think, plan and put positive things into action in our lives.

I’m finding that not only is it totally worth it to be positive in life, but also the results or the beautiful things that can happen are simply amazing!  Another huge point is that others will notice this too and some very cool things will start to happen to you.  It can all point back to having positivity in your life compared to negativity.

I’ve noticed this a lot lately as I’m listening to my podcasts while working out.  Besides Zig Ziglar’s podcast, I’m also listening to Sam Crowley’s “Every Day Is Saturday” and Scott Smith and “The Daily Boost”  and Andy Stanley’s  “Leadership podcast”.    The guys who put these out are all different, but their different messages  connect with me my heart, my thoughts and ideas on not only what I want to do in my life, but also with the guy I am working on becoming too.

So what is it in your life that is full of negativity and how is it affecting you?  Remember, what affects you affects others.  Spend a few minutes this week figuring that out and then start to make plans to distance yourself from that negativity and start to see what happens.  Don’t be shy, let me know your thoughts, progress or ideas on this.  Make it a GREAT day and an even better week!

Focus Is Such A Key To Success, Sam's Right!  Quote Of The Week!

11/30/2014

“Wherever focus goes, energy flows” – Sam Crowley

I’ve been listening to a lot of Sam’s podcasts lately…. Check him out in iTunes – great information to get you thinking about life, how to improve yourself and your thinking along with thinking a little bigger in the area of chasing your dreams.  Great stuff he’s got.

When he said this about wherever focus goes, energy flows; I had to play it again a couple of times to really let it sink in.  It sure sank in.  Got me thinking about a lot of times where whatever I was thinking about, school, things here at home, surgery thoughts, etc., that’s where whatever energy I had was indeed flowing.

So many times in my past and some recent times too; when I got down or a little depressed even – wow did not only my energy take a hit but I could feel it going towards the things that were getting me upset.  That even showed me more that the energy that was being spent on those negative issues was being sucked away from doing anything positive.

Guess what?  We get to control where our focus goes everyone!  It’s something that takes work of course and most people struggle with that, including myself.  The more I look at this, the more I want to work at improving this.  How about you?

Change Doesn't Always Mean Growth In Our Lives... Quote Of The Week.

10/19/2014

"All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward." -- Ellen Glasgow

As time seems to be flying by faster and faster for a lot of people, we all need to realize that just because things are changing, we need to ask ourselves are we really growing during the changes?  Are we getting better? Or are we just staying the same.

So many of us, including myself always seem to be busy, but what are we busy doing?  Are we moving forward in our lives?  Moving towards the person we want to be?

I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts yesterday while I was mowing the lawn.  Sam Crowley talked about defining ourselves and getting to know ourselves and finding out who do we really want to become?  The changes that happen in our lives should be focused on helping us to define who we are and where we want to go.

Since we are constantly changing and getting older every day, this advice from Sam really connects with this quote.  We really need to focus in on having a say in our life as to what changes we go through, instead of letting changes just happen to us.  Since we are moving and doing things every day, we must also focus in on that movement and make sure it’s in a direction that we want it to be in.  If we define ourselves as to who we are along with who we really want to be, both of these parts of this equation should make more sense for us.

Remember what Morrie Schwartz said about getting older.  It doesn’t always mean decay, it also means growth.  Also remember we will decay as we get older without growing, learning, getting better and focusing on where we want to go.

The sooner we figure all of this out, the better we and everyone around us will be.  I’m working at figuring this out for me and I hope you are doing the same.  Share your thoughts and ideas.  I’m always looking forward to hearing what is on your mind.
