Students Teaching This Teacher Continues...

7/30/2018

Another fun and fantastic interview with a former student of mine.   You can listen to this podcast interview HERE.   Joe has so much going for himself - chasing his dreams & passions in music, sports broadcasting and sports memorabilia too.  He's a hard worker in going after his chosen career and he's got some amazing lessons & passion to share in this conversation.  His lessons on not letting setbacks or life's curve-balls being thrown at him - those are lessons we all need to learn from for sure.  His focus on things that he wants to accomplish and go after in life are very admirable to watch and learn from.

He has done a great job speaking to my Leadership classes, sharing his story and lessons.  This term especially was special with the messages he shared with my students and the lessons that they learned from Joe will stick with them as they finished high school - or at least I hope those lessons stay with them.   I know he's got plenty of lessons that he has taught this teacher!   You can connect with Joe here on Twitter:  @Joe_Ferguson98

Interview With Pro Hockey Player Shawn Szydlowski - Lessons For This Teacher - Lessons For All

7/29/2018

WOW - what a great time spent with St. Clair Shores native, Shawn Szydlowski - a graduate of Lake Shore High School. Shawn shares some great stories, insights and lessons about chasing after his goals and dreams of playing professional hockey. I really appreciated Shawn taking some time out of his day to sit down with me for this interview. Listen to my podcast interview HERE.

So many valuable lessons that he brings out in our visit today. We had some great conversations - both off and on the show - and I am pulling for this "kid" to reach every goal and dream that he has for himself. He carries himself so well and is so caring for others - especially kids. Some great charities he's a part of that help kids - It was awesome to hear about and again, like I told him - I'm so proud of him! The lessons he shared about focus that is needed  in life, the lessons he learned early in life in going after being a hockey player.  He shared some lessons that all of us can use in our lives for sure.  You can connect with Shawn on both Twitter & Instagram: @szydlowski19

Lessons On Vacation About Time Flying By

7/23/2018

More lessons from our recent little get-away to Traverse City, Michigan. These lessons came from eating out and visiting a place that our family stayed at for years.  Eating a great breakfast at a classic place called Sparky's Diner -    Great music and great breakfasts - along with a valuable lesson just watching people when the song by Bob Dylan -" Knock, knock, knocking on Heaven's Door" came on.  This older lady was leaving the diner with her daughter I think.   Listen to the story as I describe it in my podcast - find it HERE.  Amazing clarity came to me about how fast time is going by - for me, you, all of us.

Then our visit to the North Shore Inn -  A place that we stayed at for about 18 years with our family and my in-laws too - fantastic visit there to watch another sunset and both my wife and I were treated to some emotional and fantastic memories of just being there again.   It was like watching ourselves with the families that were staying there in the same units we used - and all of them sitting outside just like we did for all of those summers.

I hope you enjoyed this episode on some things that mean a lot to me.   Thanks for listening.

Lessons From Wineries - On Vacation

7/22/2018

It's always great to get away on a vacation to places we enjoy.  My wife and I really enjoy going up North here in Michigan - the Traverse City area to be specific.  They have so many wineries that we enjoy going to and many of them we are visiting for the first time.  Three of them I mentioned on my podcast and the lessons that each of them brought.  Check out my podcast HERE.

First was a young man named Benjamin at the Laurentide Winery - A young man that grew up in the area and stayed to work in an area that he is passionate about.  He had great enthusiasm and did a great job with the customers that he was helping.  He was a very personable young man.    We had a great discussion about growing up in a small town and how he stayed and most of his life-long friends left for different adventures.  We all have those choices in life.

Another one that we stopped at was the Verterra Winery - This is where we had a great visit with Matt.  A very down to earth & personable former teacher and coach, that is now working on his second career.  Fantastic conversation with Matt and many lessons learned from him too on looking ahead to new adventures.    Going after dreams and goals, no matter your age was an important lesson that I got among other lessons.

Finally, one of my favorites that I love stopping by every time we go up North - and that is The Willow Winery -    The owners, Jo & John are such great hosts every time we see them.  They were hosting some friends, two of which were playing some fantastic live music.  A great visit with one of the best views you will ever see in your life.  Again, great lessons of gratitude, dreams, love, friendship, and so many other life lessons.

Again - a great vacation in so many ways.  I hope your next vacation has some great lessons for you.

Lessons From A Guy Named Paul

7/22/2018

There are always lessons to be found in everyday life.  Remember that success always leaves clues, we just have to be ready to pick up those clues.  Most of them can be found just by watching & listening.  The lessons from a gas station attendant - his name is Paul - and I have watched and listened to him for years, I've even talked to him a few times.  He is such a nice guy and the way he treats others is amazing!  Every time I get gas for our cars at our local Costco - I always hope he's working.  There are lessons every day from this guy and how he interacts with people.

Once again, I need to learn from him so that I can be a better version of me.  We all need to be better versions of ourselves.  Life is something that always has plenty of lessons for us to learn from.  Many come from the everyday people that we meet up with.   This guy working for a living at a place where so many people come by on usually a weekly basis, is teaching life lessons for all to learn from.  My thought is I can't be the only person learning from this guy?

Check out my podcast on this story (HERE) as there are a few other lessons here too that I share.

We Can Be Inspired With & Without Tragedies

7/20/2018

This is a personal one for me and I hope it is for you too.  These two podcasts spoke right to my heart and like many stories before (through other podcasts, books, videos, movies, articles, blog posts, etc.) I keep getting reminded about working harder, becoming better, doing more, helping others more, etc.  I don't want to just look to improve because of a sad & tragic story!  I NEED to look to do more & get better each and every day without having these stories to remind me.

Both podcasts (and many others) are from John O'Leary.  Check out the first one HERE -  A great interview with one of the first men in space  - a guy who came from having not much at all to being on top of the world.  A great story of overcoming, dreaming, hard work, believing in yourself - so many great lessons.   There is some great mix of a few actual historical recordings here on some of the things going on back in the 1960's with the space race.  Jim Lovell does a great job with story-telling all the events from back in the day.

The second one is HERE -   A HUGE story - a true story - of a high school volleyball team from Iowa, overcoming loss, and the magic of believing in others. An amazing story that was turned into a movie - "The Miracle Season" - one that I will be looking to watch, and watch soon.  Amazing lessons that I picked up from listening to the podcast, and I know there would be many  more from the actual movie too.  John  spends some wonderful time talking with Coach Kathy Bresnahan about her special team, her player and their lessons they all learned together.

Do me and yourself a huge favor - listen to both of these podcasts and then also after listening to this show of mine, start looking to see how you can look to work hard, get better, help others, be an encourager more, a more positive self-talker too.  We can do it you know - I can and so can you.

You can listen to my podcast HERE on my podcast webpage.

Friday The 13th - Lucky & Blessed To Hang Out With 2 Great Guys!

7/13/2018

Amazing discussion today with 2 very good friends of mine - Mr. Todd Stevens and Dr. Jeff Lip.  Some great laughs, some fantastic insights to education, people, relationships, leadership and many other topics on a very lucky, Friday the 13th.   You have heard from Jeff before but this was the first of many visits I hope with Todd.  Join me in finding a little bit more about both these great educators.  Click HERE to listen to show #178.  Working with both of these guys in a career that we all enjoy being in, it reminds me how lucky I have to have Todd and Jeff as a part of my life.  They are both good men that look to help people.  The world needs more of what these 2 are all about.

After we recorded the show I took a drive across the street from the library, back to the neighborhood where my wife and I bought our first house back in 1992.  It made me remember how grateful that I am for her and I to get that great start  on our home ownership part of our lives.  I remember not having a clue about being a "home-owner"!  That was supposed to be my parents, certainly not me.  I didn't know anything about owning a home.  Looking back, we both figured out what we had to do and we are still doing that today after almost 21 years in our current home.  Things worked out for both of us for sure way back then.

You can always find Dr. Jeff at his website:  jefflip.com   on Twitter: @DrJeffLip    and you can get in touch with Mr. Todd Stevens at:  tstevens@lsps.org or on Twitter:  @LSHS_AP   Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly

1999 Open at Carnoustie - Lessons From A Memorable Collapse

7/12/2018

With the 2018 Open Championship being played at Carnoustie in Scotland, it is bringing up an important history lessons that happened in 1999.   Jan van de Velde from France was a big part of that memory / lesson with his epic collapse in the final round of this tournament.  Check out this video HERE on exactly how things went down 19 years ago.  If you can watch "Go Down Swinging - 99 Open at Carnoustie" on the Golf Channel, it's a great hour worth of TV to hear all about it in his own words.

It is so intriguing to watch and learn how he responded to his loss.  The lessons are so valuable.  Summer time also is when there Wimbledon tennis - a fantastic & historical tournament with players in it from so many different countries.  This summer is also an every 4 year tradition of the World Cup Soccer tournament - with again, more great lessons & the kind of drama that I really love.   Just think - even if you don't like these sports or any sport for that matter - the lessons can still be used for all of life.

If you were to work as hard like so many of these athletes do; on things that you want to do, things you love to do in life, things that fire you up - that same dedication and effort and can help make such a difference in your life.  My recent podcast brings up some interesting thoughts.  Listen to it HERE.

One Year Of Podcasting - Thanks & Lessons All Around

7/10/2018

Holy Cow!  Exactly one year ago today, I started this podcast show.  Not only did it go by fast, but in this past year, there is so much that I have learned.  Besides the lessons learned that I talk about today (listen to my show HERE) - it's the relationships that I have been blessed to have come around in my life due to this past year- those are so valuable to me.  Thanks to you too... for listening to me.  I am truly humbled for you spending your time listening and hopefully learning a few things from me too.

There are so many lessons in this show that I think can help you out too.  One of the bigger ones that I focused on was that of how important relationships are in life.  In fact, in our lives there is really no other thing that is as important as the relationships we have.  It's something that even today at lunch I was reminded about that the work is never done on those relationships.  It's a journey and a process as there are many things that come into play for them.

Thanks again for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on ITunes or other services where you find this show.

Walking - Great For Our Health & Our Relationships Too

7/9/2018

Walking - we know it's good for us, but how about how great it is for our relationships too?  Good stuff here in this article that I came across - check it out HERE.    So many valuable points for young and old to see how important it is for all of us to get out there in some form of movement.  When we tie this into our relationships and see how the simple idea of taking a walk with someone helps to open up communication channels.  I really enjoyed taking a look at this article as it got me thinking about a few things that I know will help me and my relationships and my health too.   I think it's a great way to find some new places to travel to and then take a walk around there.  Summer is a fantastic time to do that, heck any time is good for that.
