In today's times things like this are needed more than ever. With the pandemic, politics, weather events, the economy, etc., it's crucial that we find it for ourselves. I'm finding I have a lot more of this to give, when I find more of it from reading great books, fabulous articles, listening to incredible podcasts along with watching inspirational videos. There are so many great avenues of picking up encouragement from so many resources. I will continue to share them in my podcasts, Facebook Live Videos, on Twitter, Instagram and on my YouTube Channel too. If you find anything that you find encouraging, make sure you send it my way and share it with others too.
Love these quick hitters from John Maxwell - this one from his book "25 Ways to Win with People" and it comes at a time where we all need this reminder. Little notes (or texts even) of encouragement to others are needed so much today. And those notes last a long time too for people. Try it. Reach out to someone or more than one person & let them know not only that you are thinking about them, but you are also in their corner too. Encouragement goes a long way for sure.

![]() Wow... what a productive morning today!! I got up with my cup of coffee and our dog sitting on my lap as I finished up another book - "The Bottom of The Pool" by Andy Andrews. What a fabulous book and I knew it would be since I listened to Andy Andrews on 3 different podcasts - 2 as a guest on Brian Buffini's Podcast and the other was on John O'Leary's podcast. The third one of course was on Andy's own podcast - "The Professional Noticer". The discussions I heard about this book sold me on getting a copy. His book really got me thinking about my thinking! It's everything to me as my thinking affects every thing in my life. You might say duh... that's not a surprise at all. But to hear it from him, to read it in the words that he shared so many stories about this - WOW was all I could say after reading it. That is a book that you want to make sure you get your hands on for sure. I also watched a video clip this morning sent to me by a good friend, Stan Targosz. He sent it to Dr. Jeff Lip too as the 3 of us had a fabulous meeting this past week in recording a podcast for Jeff's show - again, a must listen to... find it (after August 12, 2019) and all of his podcasts at www.jefflip.com - We had some FANTASTIC and POWERFUL discussion both before and after the show. I walked out of there very excited and fired up about things in my life. A product that usually comes from hanging out with awesome people like Stan and Jeff. Finally, I got to work out this morning - which I'm back on my schedule of every other day getting to the gym. That also allows me to listen to some great podcasts, do some awesome thinking, and always walking out of there feeling better about life and myself. This morning was no different. Scott Smith (The Daily Boost podcast), https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/motivationtomovecom/daily-boost mentioned about that it's time to become the person you have always wanted to be. To start doing the things that you need to do in order to start making that happen. The little things matter for sure. Changing habits matter. Our thinking matters. Action steps matter! Again, this is something that I know has to happen, but for many reasons (my excuses) they have not happened. Amazing to get re-connected with this again. I needed to hear it! "Dr. Ron's Words of Wisdom" (https://drronblake.com/welcome-to-dr-rons-words-of-wisdom/) was another podcast that I got to listen to, with help of Sam Crowley. Dr. Ron mentioned that "only the prepared are in a position to change directions". Again, total truth that needed to find it's way into my mind & heart. Taking the action steps, changing my habits, doing little things that become big things! What a great way to start my day and hope you use this to help yourself out a little. Came across an interesting article that I gave to my students for one of their weekly blog assignments. This article titled "6 Reasons To Step Outside Your Comfort Zone" - by Carolyn Gregoire had some great points to it. Find the article HERE.
Now this subject about getting out of my comfort zone has been one that I've been hearing a lot of lately. It has been a major part of my conversations with some friends of mine along with hearing the message over and over again in different podcasts too. When we step out of our comfort zone there can be tremendous risk involved which can lead to more worries & stress. But to me, there seems to be enough of these things in our world right now and I have tried to look upon it as opportunity rather than just sitting back and letting things happen to me and I don't do anything about it. To me, taking risk to grow and get better is a good trade off compared to the misery and worry about reacting to all the stuff going on in the world. There are new doors that open up for us when we get out of our comfort zone along with meeting new people too. We learn new things about ourselves along with picking up some new skills at times too. A little anxiety or stress can help us achieve more in our lives. The article also brings up the fact (and I agree) that we can't be getting out of our comfort zone 24 / 7. There are times where it is totally ok for us to be in our comfort zone and relaxing and unplugging for sure. That's exactly what I did this weekend and I got to say, I liked it. ;-)s No Amazing the thoughts and ideas that come to you when you choosing to put good stuff into your head. That's a key in life I've been finding lately. I get to choose what goes into my mind, thereby choosing the items I know that will have an influence on me. John O'Leary's podcasts help me in so many ways. I first connected to his book "On Fire" and now I'm hooked on his podcasts. His latest one got me fired up about a few things - find it HERE and listen to it - It got me going and I hope it at least gets you thinking too. There are so many things I need to commit to - It's about time I do those things. How about you?
One thing that I have really seen a difference in my life is the simple fact that I'm reading more. It is amazing to hear that so many people mention that throughout their lives on the importance of reading. I am finding how much of a key it is. Try it. You might like it. It's helping me to stay focused (which I need a lot of help with) and with that I'm able to commit and focus more on the things that I need to do. It's also and maybe more importantly a key to become one too. Coach Rich Popp was my special guest in a recent podcast - which you can check out HERE. When I sat down and spent some time with Coach, he showed me and every listener why he defines what a difference maker is all about. He is one that not only shows it in everything he does, but he helps others to learn about doing it too. He is one of the many reasons why I am looking forward to going back this school year. Sit back and pick up the clues of success that Coach shares from his long career in education and coaching. Remember, success leaves clues and it's up to us to gather those clues and use them in our lives.
One of the BIGGIES for me is the points he made on relationships - so valuable, so needed in today's world. I see this need more so every day - there will be more of my podcasts and blogs focused in on this fact. You can contact Coach Popp at: Theshorefb@gmail.com Thanks for listening. Looking back throughout my life - it came about many times in the summer. I was off school and you might wonder why that would happen then? Probably since I was not being too productive most of the time. Letting myself down in many ways, not working on things that I knew I should be working on. Those bad habits I knew that I should improve upon, yet I wasn't. The 4 points in this article that I found - find it HERE - it's a great read that I think will help you with some ideas to get out of the next funk you are in. It helped me. It also helped to remind me that I do indeed have the power to get out of these darker moments in life. I don't have to let it affect me and hold me back. I am not denying them but I do want to take charge more when those moments come up in life - and they always come up for all of us. Listen to my podcast about this - find it HERE as it has some great things to think about the next time you are in a funk - and remember, there will always be a next time. More lessons from our recent little get-away to Traverse City, Michigan. These lessons came from eating out and visiting a place that our family stayed at for years. Eating a great breakfast at a classic place called Sparky's Diner - Great music and great breakfasts - along with a valuable lesson just watching people when the song by Bob Dylan -" Knock, knock, knocking on Heaven's Door" came on. This older lady was leaving the diner with her daughter I think. Listen to the story as I describe it in my podcast - find it HERE. Amazing clarity came to me about how fast time is going by - for me, you, all of us.
Then our visit to the North Shore Inn - A place that we stayed at for about 18 years with our family and my in-laws too - fantastic visit there to watch another sunset and both my wife and I were treated to some emotional and fantastic memories of just being there again. It was like watching ourselves with the families that were staying there in the same units we used - and all of them sitting outside just like we did for all of those summers. I hope you enjoyed this episode on some things that mean a lot to me. Thanks for listening. I think for many people this statement not only becomes really clear as they get older, but it also begins to clear up that we did not go after those things we wanted to throughout our life. It’s usually at that point that another thought crosses our minds - we now realize we are running out of time as we continue to get older. Another part of this story is that we get this a little bit when we are young because our adult path through life has not started yet when we are still in school. We start seeing things that are possible when we are out doing things in our lives. We connect with people and find opportunities through them. If we are lucky, we will get to know them and they just might become good friends who are encouragers and difference makers with us. That’s where some special magic can happen, when we have others pushing us towards our dreams and goals. It becomes a lot easier that way instead of just ourselves trying to do it. I’ve also come to realize that we need constant motivation, positive thoughts, energy, focus, great people around us, doing things everyday that we have a passion for and countless other things that help to make life great. Podcasts, reading great books, creating great habits, etc., are all ways to help in these areas. We can’t get caught up in negativity, hatred, gossip, etc., and that is directly connected to our thoughts and to those we have around us. Since we have control over our thoughts and who we let into our lives, it must be easy. Yea…. Right!! Start today. Look at where you are at. Realize you have just scratched the surface as to what you can do and who you can become. There is really endless room for improvement. That’s a very good thing. It can happen in little baby steps – every day! "When you are bigger than your purpose you have a career. When your purpose is bigger than you, you have a calling." — John Maxwell
I got back to a John Maxwell quote because I heard him say something this morning in my car ride into work. I listen to his podcast “Minute with Maxwell” and I know there is probably not a more valuable 60 seconds around. Something he said got me thinking about success and purpose. He mentions that most people have different ideas of what success is. There are so many definitions and ideas for all of us. The thing he said that out of all the successful people he knows is that each one of them has purpose in their lives. That has been on my radar for awhile now in my life. The purposes that I have are many, but they all come down to making a difference with people. Obviously it’s one of the main reasons why I became a teacher. People who get into teaching and at the top of their list of reasons why, is for summers?? That is one thing that I quickly tell people to remember that summers don’t last! It certainly isn’t for the money, although is not horrible. People last and relationships last (at least some of them do), that’s the reason to get into teaching. It’s all about making a difference and the younger the people we can do that with, the better they and others will be. If you think of all the people that will come into contact with our students throughout their lifetimes, and the difference they will make with them because of something you did in the time you worked with them, that’s powerful stuff! We need more people figuring out what their purpose is. We also need more people to do things and live life with passion! That has become one of my main messages over the years to my students and now I’m getting braver to make sure it’s my message to adults too. It’s never too late to find your purpose and passion and to make changes to go after those. The only time when it’s too late is when you take your last breath. Which remember, we all are going to do at sometime. That’s a driving force in my life now not to leave with “any of my music inside of me” that still has to be played. Have you figured out what your purpose is? What are you passionate about? The bigger question is if you don’t know, what are you doing to find out what they are? “Beautiful things happen when you distance yourself from negativity” – Zig Ziglar
I got caught. I was listening to Zig Ziglar’s podcasts the other day and something connected with me about the importance of being positive. Then Zig caught me checking out Facebook and there was this quote of his that popped up. It connected right away with me. I think this is one of the most important things we can spend our time focusing on in our lives. I’ve tried hard over the years to have myself stay away from negative things and thinking. There have been times I’ve been successful and other times quite the opposite. Negativity takes away from so many things in our lives. I’ve seen it happen over and over again. From our health, to our relationships, to our thinking, to everything – negativity affects it all. The same can be said for being positive. It all starts with us taking the time to think, plan and put positive things into action in our lives. I’m finding that not only is it totally worth it to be positive in life, but also the results or the beautiful things that can happen are simply amazing! Another huge point is that others will notice this too and some very cool things will start to happen to you. It can all point back to having positivity in your life compared to negativity. I’ve noticed this a lot lately as I’m listening to my podcasts while working out. Besides Zig Ziglar’s podcast, I’m also listening to Sam Crowley’s “Every Day Is Saturday” and Scott Smith and “The Daily Boost” and Andy Stanley’s “Leadership podcast”. The guys who put these out are all different, but their different messages connect with me my heart, my thoughts and ideas on not only what I want to do in my life, but also with the guy I am working on becoming too. So what is it in your life that is full of negativity and how is it affecting you? Remember, what affects you affects others. Spend a few minutes this week figuring that out and then start to make plans to distance yourself from that negativity and start to see what happens. Don’t be shy, let me know your thoughts, progress or ideas on this. Make it a GREAT day and an even better week! |
