What We Have Inside Us Point Us To Our Future Path

6/7/2015

"What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you." – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The ideas inside of us are what will be coming in our future – along with the thoughts, ideas and experiences we have had in our past – those help us form the thoughts and ideas today that will be potentially there in our future.  It’s up to us to act on those and start making them happen.

I think I have put too much weight (at times) on things that have happened to me from my past.  Instead, I know now that I should be internalizing those thoughts into action now for a very bright future.  The things that lie ahead of us without our action to add to it are really nothing.  What lies in front of us in the future – it needs us to be a major part in that – we are the ones that only can make it happen.  What’s inside of us is that magic that will take the things in front of us and add life to it.

Pam, who is a friend of mine saw this quote and mentioned “I totally agree...I think what is inside you determines what lies in front of you.” I think she is totally right.   In fact since we have control of what is inside of ourselves, we have total control of those things that are in our future.  Now, we are not in control of things that will happen to us, things that happen in the world that affect us, along with not being in control of others that will affect us.  You know what’s coming next – we are in total control of how we respond to all those things that happen to us.

So knowing that what’s inside us is what helps bring clarity to our futures, why not set out today to begin working on the things that are inside of us??  I know it’s something that I need to continue to work on throughout my life.  There are so many ways to do that – reading, changing our thinking, fixing bad habits, strengthening body, mind, soul along with improving and strengthening our relationships too.

Another big thing I think is to really try and figure out where your heart is at with what you want to do with your life.  The sooner you ask this the better you, your future, your loved ones, and everyone you come into contact with will be better.  As soon as we start working on these things, our present and our future will start opening up with more opportunities.   What are some things we can do right now in these areas and others too?  I know what I’m working on – do you?  I just know I have to do more.

Working On Ourselves Is Always Work That Is Worthwhile - Quote of the Week

“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

I got to be honest; I never really appreciated Ralph Waldo Emerson until I was in my 30’s.  I remember learning a little bit about him in high school of course, but never really saw the value of his work until many years later.  Talk about someone that  offers value with his work, I sure can see it now.

I am constantly telling my students, my own kids, anyone that I can; we only have one name – we have to make it a good one.  This goes along with Ralph’s statement.  We are the only ones that we can work on to make better.  I mean we can certainly help others to improve and become better people that’s for sure.  But as far as the idea on who do we have the most influence with?  It’s ourselves for sure.

When it comes down to it, we really are the only ones that we can work on.  Other people have influence over us for sure, and we can get help from others too.  The mirror is the true spot for us to see the main project that we have to work on in our lives and that’s ourselves.

We also here it all the time – life is short.  When you think about it, we don’t really have all the time in the world.  That fact usually kicks in for most people after the age of 40 I think.  It’s never too early to figure out the fact that we really don’t have all the time in the world.  Part of life’s success puzzle is to figure this piece out.  There are a few pieces to that puzzle to learn about, this is just one of them.  The sooner we work on making ourselves the best we can be, the sooner the other pieces in our life success puzzle will become clear.  I think that Is a future project that I’m going to work on – the pieces to our life success puzzle.

How are you going to work on improving yourself?  What are some thoughts and ideas you might want to share with me and others on this?  Let me know.  Continued success for you and all you want to do.

On a side note, I’m still recovering from my back surgery. It’s going well, but it will be a long process that’s for sure.  My patience is growing, which is one of the many positives from this experience.

“Without enthusiasm you are doomed to a life of mediocrity, but with it you can accomplish miracles." - Og Mandino

This is one of the most important keys to success.  Og Mandino has it connected so well to a successful and meaningful life.  As I read this quote this morning, sitting at home (from a snow day off of work) with a copy of my "Eight O-Clock" brand coffee, it got me thinking as to how fired up I get towards things that I'm doing in my life.  Teaching and Coaching - things that have gotten me to where I am today along with where it's taking me in my future too.

Looking back however, I did not really take the view of what I was doing.  I always knew I enjoyed what I was doing, but now I can attach that word and idea of being enthusiastic (or what I call - being fired up) over what I do.  Let me tell you - what a difference it has made for me.  With all the things going on in the world, especially in the field of education, if I wasn't "fired up" over my job I might be doing something else today.

That enthusiasm has translated in to helping me become re-energized not only about my career, but my future as well.  I've been having these ideas that I would like to do in my life.  I call dreams I guess.  Since I've been awaken to the fact that I am enthused about my career - it has translated into me getting fired up about a whole bunch of things in my life, including those dreams I've had.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated ever so well:  "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm".  Take a few moments as the new year gets started to see what gets you "fired up".  Then start figure out how to do those things.  Always looking for help - I know many of you are better at this concept than I am.  I can use all the help I can get and I'm hoping I can help a few of you out too.  Let me know.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Short one this week due to final exams going on.  I actually got this from one of my students' blog posts.  It really hit me as to how right on Ralph was.  I have heard a few times that the most important two days in a person's life is the day they are born and the day they figure out what they were meant to do with their life.  Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us that it's up to us.  I'm here to help you to understand that this process is a huge journey that takes most of your life.

Sometimes we figure out what we were meant to do early - but then it still could take a lot of time to get it going and figure out how to make it happen.  That's where I am now.  I've figured out about making a difference with people; mainly young adults, athletes, teachers, coaches, parents, etc.  Now I'm on the part of the journey to make that happen.

What part of your journey are you on?  It's easy to figure out - as one of the two important days has already happened for us. :-)

"To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are always so many times throughout our lives where we have the opportunity to help someone else.  There can be many ways of doing that.  It might come from a simple smile, holding a door open for someone or many other simple ways.  There could also be other ways that might take more time or more of a direct action from us to help someone.

Throughout our lifetime there are so many people that come in and out of our lives.  Any time we can help someone in life, that creates a small piece of success for the other person and ourselves too.  It actually can do more.  Most of the time, other people are witnesses to that helping action.  We can show others a great example to create little bits of success in their lives too.

So many times most people think that having a ton of money or a great number of possessions are signs of success.  Ralph Waldo Emerson has so many writings and ideas that go against that notion.  He seems that he was all about helping us to work on improving ourselves and focusing on helping others.  That to me is a sure sign of a great formula for us to have success in our lifetime.  Just think, if more people went about living their lives with this thought of helping others - think about all the great things that could happen.  What are your ideas and thoughts about what Mr. Emerson has said?
