Teamwork - From A High Schooler's Point of View

9/25/2019

Our most recent blog assignment was all about our current Character term for the week - Teamwork.  I found a TED Talk from a high school senior that shared some ideas about teamwork.  Find the video HERE on Youtube.

I found it very interesting that he brought up the fact that most teens (a lot of older people too) don't really like working in groups.  It seems all to often that we are the ones doing most, if not all the work for the others in the group.  Not only is that many times the case, it's done on purpose from the others.  They want someone else to do the work for them and then take the credit for it.  Obviously that is not good teamwork at all.  It's also funny that so many people agree that they are the ones doing all the work and it's the OTHER PEOPLE that are looking for the free ride.  That doesn't leave many people in that other people group.  :-)

I had a discussion with my classes about this topic and really the importance of seeing this not just as a school connection, but a life connection.  Looking back I can't remember ever a time, in all my jobs where I did not have to work with other people or depend on others to get things done.  It seems with all the technology in the world today, we still need people to help us get things done.  We may use forms of technology to get things accomplished, but those things will always be about and be for people.   That's why I think it's imperative for us to keep looking to get along with people.  It's not that we have like everyone, but we should look to work with others to get things accomplished.  In today's "I'm right, your wrong" type of society, this makes sense to at least try and work on. It's not easy, but it is for sure worth it.  The more we can learn about ourselves and others, the better things will be.  That will be one of my things that I will always be spending time working on.  Teamwork is where it's at.

Lessons From A Guy Named Paul

7/22/2018

There are always lessons to be found in everyday life.  Remember that success always leaves clues, we just have to be ready to pick up those clues.  Most of them can be found just by watching & listening.  The lessons from a gas station attendant - his name is Paul - and I have watched and listened to him for years, I've even talked to him a few times.  He is such a nice guy and the way he treats others is amazing!  Every time I get gas for our cars at our local Costco - I always hope he's working.  There are lessons every day from this guy and how he interacts with people.

Once again, I need to learn from him so that I can be a better version of me.  We all need to be better versions of ourselves.  Life is something that always has plenty of lessons for us to learn from.  Many come from the everyday people that we meet up with.   This guy working for a living at a place where so many people come by on usually a weekly basis, is teaching life lessons for all to learn from.  My thought is I can't be the only person learning from this guy?

Check out my podcast on this story (HERE) as there are a few other lessons here too that I share.

"To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are always so many times throughout our lives where we have the opportunity to help someone else.  There can be many ways of doing that.  It might come from a simple smile, holding a door open for someone or many other simple ways.  There could also be other ways that might take more time or more of a direct action from us to help someone.

Throughout our lifetime there are so many people that come in and out of our lives.  Any time we can help someone in life, that creates a small piece of success for the other person and ourselves too.  It actually can do more.  Most of the time, other people are witnesses to that helping action.  We can show others a great example to create little bits of success in their lives too.

So many times most people think that having a ton of money or a great number of possessions are signs of success.  Ralph Waldo Emerson has so many writings and ideas that go against that notion.  He seems that he was all about helping us to work on improving ourselves and focusing on helping others.  That to me is a sure sign of a great formula for us to have success in our lifetime.  Just think, if more people went about living their lives with this thought of helping others - think about all the great things that could happen.  What are your ideas and thoughts about what Mr. Emerson has said?

"Sharpen your interest in two major subjects: life and people. You will only gather information from a source if you are interested in it." -- Jim Rohn

What a great quote - summertime or during the school year, it doesn't matter.  We all should "major" in these two subjects.  The key is - where to find the info on these two important topics?  One is from the man  that gave us this quote.  I suggest that you find him on Twitter (@OfficialJimRohn), find his pages on Facebook, check out his website (http://www.jimrohn.com) and find any of his outstanding books that are out there too.

These two subjects should be something that we are all passionate about.  Getting good in these two areas will open up the doors for so many other areas.  Since we only get one shot at life, we might as well do all we can to make our journey the best it can be.  Along with the idea that so many people come in and out of our lives throughout our lifetime, it too is something we might as well handle the best we can by learning as much as we can about people.  As I tell my students and my two kids all the time about finding things to be passionate about and then chase after those things.

Study, read, learn all you can about these two subjects.  They are simple by just the words - but oh so difficult to really learn about.  There is not a better time to learn and study - it's summer!  A perfect time to do some reading, thinking and learning.  In fact, I will be doing just that.  Look for some more things coming out that not only might help you, but I know for sure it will help me.  Speaking about help, help me and others by letting me know what you think about this quote.  Leave some thoughts here or get in touch with me.

“Confidence is contagious. So is the lack of confidence.” -- Vince Lombardi

So many things in life are contagious if you are around it enough.  The statement that Coach Lombardi made about confidence is no different,  Some people are born with confidence and it translates to almost everything they do.  Others, probably more of us, do not have natural confidence and it has to be learned.  I for one, am still trying to learn how to be more confident in many areas of my life.

This statement connects with the idea that I have always told my students, in fact it's a part of what I usually write in their yearbook if they every ask me to write in it.   Part of it is always "surround yourself with good people."  This is where confidence and the lack of confidence can be contagious.   if the people you hang out with are confident people in the things they do, that will help you to be more confident.  Especially if those things they are doing are good things.  If a group of people, a team, etc., have a common goal or on the same page of helping and supporting each other - that is a very powerful connection for all of them.  I think you can really substitute many different words for confidence in the quote.  Dedication, teamwork, A positive attitude, etc.   What are your thoughts on this quote?  Did it get you thinking a little bit I hope?

Best Apologies We Can Do

7/13/2011

“Right actions in the future are the best apologies for bad actions in the past.” -Tyron Edwards

I read this quote on a Facebook posting this morning and it got me thinking.

What a great quote to think about and then put into action.

Since we all make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes hurt the ones we love; one of the best things we can
do to make amends is to change the way we act and the way we do things in the future.

Summertime is a great time to take a look at where we are going in our lives. Certain times during the summer, when we get the chance to hopefully slow down and relax; is the perfect time to reflect on things that have been going on in our lives.

Then upon that reflection, it’s time to do something about it.

That "doing" piece, has been a problem of mine for as long as I can remember.

It’s one of the main missing puzzle pieces in my life.  I have recently found that I knew what it was, but yet I still have had trouble making that piece fit into my puzzle of my life.

I have found myself saying a I’m sorry to people for not doing things I said I would do.  My wife is the main person that I need to focus this quote on in my life.  I can start doing it right now, I actually started yesterday.

Actions speak louder than words.  I have learned that in my life and continue to learn it all the time.

What areas can you work on that would make things better with someone you care for?

As always, I think when people share experiences, we all get to learn from those shared stories.  Let me know your
thoughts.

Games and Life - part 2

Games and Life – part 2
By Coach John Daly
Re-printed from 2009 posting on my former blog

Picking up from part 1….

The other part of my story with playing golf the other day with my dad happened even before I even got out to his house.

When I was leaving that morning, I stopped at 7-11 for some coffee.  As I was getting mine, a lady came in and was upset that they changed her favorite flavor of the cappuccino.   She walked out disgusted and I thought as to what her day was going to be like.

How could she get so upset because of her coffee?    I kind of chuckled to myself quietly.

I love coffee… at times I think it’s too much.  But I know that would not really be a reason for me to get too upset and have it ruin my day!  I really felt sorry for the people that she was going to be around today.

I mentioned something to the clerk about it and he said,“that’s nothing, awhile ago, we had a guy come in and yell at the owner because we did not have any of the chocolate creams for his coffee!”

Can you believe that? I guess if we think about it, sad to say, we have all run into someone like this.

Of course this drove home the memory of me being like this at times in my life, yuk,  I don’t want to go back to being that kind of person.

The clerk and I both agreed that there are far more important things in life to get worked up about compared to coffee.

I know most people see lessons like that all the time in our day-to-day activities and travels. There are constant lessons for all of us to learn from, every day, wherever we go.  It’s just so important for us to pick up on those lessons.

Like I tell my kids, students and players – watch, look and listen.

You can learn so much from others and that means that we don’t have to make the same mistakes we see others making.  I know you are thinking of at least one example right now that just came to you about this one.

By the way, the clerk greeted me with a very positive attitude and a “good morning – how are you doing?”  So I knew that he caught the same thing that I did.

I retold the story to my dad as we were playing the 10thhole.  We had both lost a couple of shots– I lost 2 balls and he lost 1.  We both had to use the drop area then we both proceeded to miss the green.

Another lesson hit me again. As frustrating as golf is (for me at least), it’s a great, great game.  Not only can anyone play the game, really at any age; but it offers such great life lessons. This time it got me thinking the best way to approach playing golf is just like life.

You have to have a humble attitude along with watching your ego.  Golf is very humbling.  It teaches you to not get too worked up about little things (like coffee or a bad shot).  It’s a learning experience – just as life is.

We should learn from our mistakes on the course and in life.  If I ever get to thinking that,“hey, this game isn’t so tough” or “hmm… I’m pretty good at this game”.  The game, just as life, will bring you to your knees.

That must be where my bad knees come from.

My dad and I agreed that we both understood that point.  We also agreed that it was a good thing we enjoyed the company we were playing with too.  Remember, who we hang out with in life, does matter.

Do what you can to learn from wherever you are and whatever you are doing.  Learn from others.

Keep in mind things that are really important in life.  Look for these little success and leadership principles in your day.  No matter what’s going on in your life right now, there are lessons to be learned.

Remember, when those brick walls and frustrating moments come up in our lives; two things to think about.

As Dr. Randy Pausch said “those brick walls are there to see how bad we want what we are going after in life.”

The other point to remember is that those are the moments where we can learn the most by the way we handle the brick wall or frustration.

I’m always repeating that great quote that was given to me from a friend – “Don’t play small in life”, someone needs your help.

Get in touch with me to share your stories so you can do just that.  Your stories can help someone for sure.
