We All Have To Have Confidence and Hope In Our Lives

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." - Helen Keller

As I sit here with my (you guessed it) first cup of coffee, I’m listening to the rain and I’m thinking about many things.  Most of the things I’m thinking about  (my wife and family, my basketball coaches and players that I’m blessed to be working with, what I’m calling “the summer of change”, the books I want to read, and how thankful I am for this cup of coffee among many other things), I get a very contagious feeling of hope and peacefulness.

I’ve always tried to have an optimistic attitude or outlook in my life.  There are many times where this is difficult and challenging, but I always strive to get back to having this type of outlook.  I do know for sure that Helen Keller was correct in that things cannot be accomplished without hope and confidence.  At least anything that matters.

Having an optimistic attitude or outlook in life is a lot easier for us when we are doing things that are connected to our heart and have passion for.  It also connects with the people that we have in our lives as we need others to help encourage us, love us where we are at, support us, listen to us along with us doing the same for them.  This helps instill faith in ourselves that we can achieve things we want to do.   If we don’t have all these pieces to the puzzle, things get a little bit more difficult and that at times will lead to not having hope or confidence in ourselves and in our situations that we live in.

This comes back to the start, the foundation that we have to have to work on setting the table so to speak, for ourselves to have this optimism in our lives.  We have to reach down inside of ourselves and find out what are the things that light us on fire!  What are the things that we get fired up and make us want to go after certain things in life?  We need to be conscious of the thoughts, information and ideas coming into our minds along with finding and keeping those people in our lives that help us and that we are able to help too.

Start today by looking at this quote and figure out what feeds into this optimism in our lives.  Then look at what are the things in your heart that you know you want to accomplish and go after.  Is what you do, day in and day out, helping you have more hope and confidence in your life?  Or are those things pointing to not having hope and no confidence in your life?  Figure out just one change today that you can make to start feeling better about things.  Then keep working on that one thing as you identify one other thing, then another, and another and so on.  Just keep working on one thing and keep it going as those will lead to other things to work on and improve and then just watch the changes that start to happen.

What’s one thing for you to start on right now?  One thing for me – to start reading more books, more articles, etc.  Another quick one for me is to put more action into my days of doing the things that I have to do to make things happen.  Anything that can help make me better, I have to do.  Share yours as I bet it might help someone else out too.

Always Look To Learn - You Don't Know It All!

“Don't be too proud to take a lesson.  I'm not.” ~ Jack Nicklaus

As I sit here on my traditional Saturday morning with my coffee and getting some work done I was drawn to this thought from the great golfer Jack Nicklaus.  Now first of all, Mr. Nicklaus is not only a great golfer, in my opinion he’s an even great human being.  His love for people is very evident any time you listen to him along with his great respect for the game of golf.

To read and think about his point about him not being too proud to take a lesson, brings up the reminder for all of us.  He’s not really even talking about golf – he’s talking about life. He has been a life-long learner about life, about people, about business, and yes about golf too.

This also connected to me as I’ve been focusing on taking “lessons” recently.  My lessons have consisted from learning from others.  Recently Lauren Hill (college basketball player who had been diagnosed with brain cancer and went out and made A HUGE DIFFERENCE with sharing her message, raising over a million dollars for cancer research, etc. – well, she passed away this week).  I posted online about when I heard the news, I was moved to tears.  I just sat there for a few moments and cried when I heard the news and I remember crying when I first heard about her story.  It got me thinking about all that she was accomplishing while going through her battle with cancer, and here I am struggling at times doing what I have to do.  Her lesson of making a difference during her struggles has re-inspired me to do more of making a difference with others in my life, and doing it right now – not waiting anymore.

Sam Crowley of everydayissaturday.com has connected with me for years from his book, his podcasts, his message of hope and getting up off my butt to actually do something towards accomplishing my goals- he too has taught me many lessons.  His story of what him, his wife and his family have been going through with their daughter Susan – born at just 24 weeks and all the roller-coaster moments of all that they had to go through, and still are going through.

I got to spend some time with my parents recently going out to their house and spending the night.  Just sitting and talking with them, listening to them, sharing meals with them, etc., tons of lessons for me to learn from.  We spoke about my cousin Dave who recently passed away last fall – all the lessons from him and that experience.  I told my mom that I think about him often.  She said we all do.  I also drove through my old neighborhood.  All the great memories came flooding back to me. All the friends I grew up with. The heart-aches and the good times we had.  You know what – there were tons of lessons there too.  The lessons from my past that has affected my todays.  I try not to dwell on those memories, but I do use them to inspire me for today and my future.  I’ve heard it before and I’ll share it always; don’t ever forget where you came from.

When it comes down to it – be a learner, be a student.  Don’t you dare think that you don’t need to learn new things.  Don’t ever think that you know everything, that you have arrived, that you don’t need others to help you, we all need others in our lives.  So as the sun comes through my doorwall here, I am reminded that today is a new beginning where I will learn new things and new lessons. It’s up to me to apply those lessons to get better and do more.  What will you do with the lessons you get to learn from today?

Failures Are Not Fatal, Unless We Fail To Change - Quote Of The Week!

“Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.”  John Wooden

It seems this thought, like many others, have been hovering around me in many different ways over the last few months.  Looking back it probably started while I was home recovering and I had a little more time to do some thinking along with having time to notice a few things more than I normally get the opportunity to do.

There have been many failures in my life and I have finally begun to look at them with more of a studying type of look and learning from it, instead of being a victim or blaming others.   I’ve had glimpses of this better type of thinking throughout my life, now it just seems to be happening more frequently as I get older.

I’m noticing things changing a lot more too.  With both of our kids off at college, there is more time for my wife and I to do things together along with time to do things ourselves too.  Both of our parents are getting older and all the issues that seem to come with age are starting to happen with it too.  Speaking of age, my wife and I are getting older too of course.  There are things that we have to make changes in so many areas of our lives right now.

That goes for all of us.   No matter what age we are at, learning from failures that happen (and they happen a lot in life), are necessary for success.  The idea of not changing when times dictate that we need to do that, those can be disastrous.

I look around and I see plenty of people that refuse to change.  They wear it as a badge of courage for not changing.  They either think they know everything and they don’t have to change.  Some think they need to show how tough they are and that they can do things on their own without any help from others.  This might be the most fatal failure of all – where people don’t think they have to change.  I think if you’re not changing, you are actually on your way to getting worse.  That’s one thing I don’t ever want to do – I’m looking to always get better.  How about you?

Grow Through Life... Quote Of The Week

"Don't go through life, grow through life." -- Eric Butterworth

The first thought I had when I saw this quote was from the character Morrie – in “Tuesday’s With Morrie”, a great movie based on the even better book by Mitch Albom.  In the move the character of Morrie, played by Jack Lemmon, made a statement that I think has tremendous power for us living our lives.  He said “Age is not just decay, it’s growth!”

What a very true and accurate statement.  However, how many of us look at getting older that way?  My guess would be not many.  I for one, took a while to see it this way and Mitch’s book helped me with this idea that has really helped me.

Looking back over the last year and so much happening to me and my family, the deaths of an uncle, a cousin, a good friend of my son; the illnesses of my dad and my wife’s dad, my two surgeries on my knee and my back, some difficult moments for my kids; these really gave me the time to reflect and grow from these experiences.  I know these things are part of life and for most of my life as I got old enough to understand, I knew this was the way life happens.

What I didn’t know was that there are so many opportunities to grow and get better from all of our experiences in life.  The ones that cause us a lot of pain, sorry, sadness, feelings of regret, etc.; but also the everyday small moments too.  The lessons are there every day, big and small for us to use to help us grow in our lives.

For me, I grew in having more patience with these two surgeries.  I had to or else I and everyone around me were going to be miserable.   I still don’t show patience every time I should, but I recognize those moments more where I do need to have it.  I grew in my love and appreciation for my wife for everything that she has done for me along with trying to do the everyday things she has to do at work and things she is working on for herself too.  I also literally grew taller too.  With my back surgery on my spine, I gained a half to three-quarters of an inch in height. ;-)

Where are some of the areas that you can grow from in your life?  Remember that we are on this journey in life without knowing how long it will be and all the things that will happen to us throughout that journey.  Also remember that growth and lessons seem to be more valuable to learn from those things that hurt us, those sad moments, those painful moments; than from the moments where everything goes perfect.  Start looking today to not just go through the everyday motions of life – but to go through all of life’s moments to grow and learn from.  Always look to do more and get better.

Is The Glass Half Full or Half Empty? There's More To This Story - Quote Of The Week!

1/25/2015

"The contents of the glass don’t matter; what’s more important is to realize there’s a pitcher of water nearby. In other words, we have the capacity to refill the glass, or to change our outlook." -- Shawn Achor

Anybody thirsty?  There is nothing like having a full glass of cold water to quench our thirst when we find ourselves really thirsty on a hot sunny day.  It is such a relief, an energizer, a re-focusing moment where we can feel better after we drink it.

There is also the question with this glass of how we view life.  Is the glass half empty or half full in our outlook in life?  Most of us know people where we can see how they view their glass of water just by their actions and words.

The key from this thought that Shawn leaves with us is that it doesn’t matter what the content are in the glass, nor does it matter at what level it is in the glass.  The important point is that we have to recognize there is a pitcher nearby that we can choose to grab and fill up the glass again and again and again!

That will take effort and thought on our part of course and that’s another piece of the puzzle that many people don’t want to do.  Some would rather other people or the government; fill up their glass rather doing it themselves.

If we take care of it ourselves, we get to choose what we pour into our glass.  Is it going to be water or will it be some other substance?  Will it be things that energize, help us to re-focus, grow stronger, etc.?  Will it be things that make us weaker, un-focused and distracted and even make us sick?  This connects with the fact that we have a choice as to what comes into ourselves and into our life that we want for ourselves.

We all can start to build a more positive outlook by asking ourselves these questions:  How can I reach out and better connect with my co-workers, neighbors, family or friends?  What are some ways my actions make a difference to the world?  What am I proud of accomplishing today?

You can start off the week thinking about these things and I bet by the end of the week, you will be able to look back on some very positive moments.  You can share some thoughts and help not only yourself but others too.

Making Changes Can Be Difficult - Quote Of The Week

11/24/2014

"Making changes can be difficult, but less difficult than repeating the same old story." – LoraneGordon

As we get ready to finish up our fall term at school, this got me thinking about how different things are now for our seniors compared to when our term started back in early September.  Things have changed for everyone of them, that’s for sure.  But how many of our seniors can say they had a say in all those changes that happened to them?  Most of the time none of us can say that we had control over every single change that has happened to us over a period of time; that’s not how life works.

It is very important that we look at those things we do have control over and always look to control those things.  So much of life is out of control, yet it affects us in different and sometimes may ways.  It’s all about adjusting things in our life so that need to major on the majors.  This long-term saying that still holds true today.  There are important things in our lives that we need to focus on and that we have actual control over.  There are many more minor things in life that we don’t need to focus on since they are not really that important.

When it comes time to make changes in our lives, they should be focused on those things that help us go where we want to go in life.  Change can certainly be scary as most humans enjoy being in their comfort zone and not have to venture too far from that zone too often.  If we look at the pain of change and when that pain is less than if we stay the same, then it becomes easier to change.  If we keep repeating the same things that give us results that we don’t like; then it’s fur sure a time to change.

I’m wondering if any of our seniors are doing that as their high school years are quickly coming to an end.  Are there changes that they have to make that will make things easier for them in the long run? Or are those changes too scary to even attempt?  Our seniors are not the only ones that need to look at this – we all need to do this.  The important thing to realize is the younger we start making necessary changes in our lives, the less difficult they will be.

I saw something else that fits with this – we will never be younger than we are today.  The longer we wait, the harder those changes will be to make.  I should know, I’ve put things off far too long in my life and I’m working on changing that right now.  Our seniors are so far ahead of my pace.  Good for them.

Working On Ourselves Is Always Work That Is Worthwhile - Quote of the Week

“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

I got to be honest; I never really appreciated Ralph Waldo Emerson until I was in my 30’s.  I remember learning a little bit about him in high school of course, but never really saw the value of his work until many years later.  Talk about someone that  offers value with his work, I sure can see it now.

I am constantly telling my students, my own kids, anyone that I can; we only have one name – we have to make it a good one.  This goes along with Ralph’s statement.  We are the only ones that we can work on to make better.  I mean we can certainly help others to improve and become better people that’s for sure.  But as far as the idea on who do we have the most influence with?  It’s ourselves for sure.

When it comes down to it, we really are the only ones that we can work on.  Other people have influence over us for sure, and we can get help from others too.  The mirror is the true spot for us to see the main project that we have to work on in our lives and that’s ourselves.

We also here it all the time – life is short.  When you think about it, we don’t really have all the time in the world.  That fact usually kicks in for most people after the age of 40 I think.  It’s never too early to figure out the fact that we really don’t have all the time in the world.  Part of life’s success puzzle is to figure this piece out.  There are a few pieces to that puzzle to learn about, this is just one of them.  The sooner we work on making ourselves the best we can be, the sooner the other pieces in our life success puzzle will become clear.  I think that Is a future project that I’m going to work on – the pieces to our life success puzzle.

How are you going to work on improving yourself?  What are some thoughts and ideas you might want to share with me and others on this?  Let me know.  Continued success for you and all you want to do.

On a side note, I’m still recovering from my back surgery. It’s going well, but it will be a long process that’s for sure.  My patience is growing, which is one of the many positives from this experience.

Some Education Never Ends... Quote Of The Week

9/14/2014

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can choose to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

There is a reason that Nelson Mandela had such a huge impact on the world was that education was one of his cornerstones of having a meaningful life.  He was right about education being the most powerful weapon that can change the world.  First and foremost, it can change our world for sure. When our world changes, we can than have a changing affect on other people too.

There's a saying that when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. That's one of the many things that education allows us to do.  Education opens up so many doors for us too.  The doors that open inside of us are some of the more important ones and what I mean by that is an education always helps us learn so much about ourselves.  Of course there are doors that open up to other things and other people in life too, but I really think the internal ones sometimes are the most important.

Also remember, when we are talking about an education, it's not just from the traditional school.  Of course our K-12, college, certification programs, the trades, military, etc., are all important ways of gaining an education.  I think the real "education" that is out there for us to learn from is the one we get from life itself.  Our regular education helps us get there, but then we have to pay attention and have a clue about what we can learn from life too.

Finally, we also have to remember to be open for learning too.  We all know that as hard as life can be, having all the weapons we can have to help ourselves get through life is so important.  Having a good education is key.  How's your education going these days??

There Is Always Time to Refresh Our Attitude And Our Thinking - Quote of the Week!

9/1/2014

"Refresh your attitude and adjust your thinking!" - Les Brown

Most days I get these great updates online from Les Brown and today was no exception.  When I saw this, it was part of a longer posting, but this first line really stood out to me.  Mainly it's because I know that I need to do this on a regular basis, but I needed to see it from Les to really make a connection I guess.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized that we all need to focus on this simple yet powerful statement.

It really has become apparent to me lately, especially watching and listening to the media, that if we don't refresh our attitudes once in awhile along with adjusting our thinking, we will fall victim to what the media is preaching and promoting to society.  The biggest part of what I see is going on is that there is a massive push it seems to have us take less responsibility for our own lives and to fixate blame on others.  That could be a certain political party or elected officials, it could be other countries, other races, the government, heck the list goes on and on.

Life continues to give us ups and downs.  It's our job to respond correctly to these things that life throws at us.  This summer with my knee surgery, both our kids out of the house and attending college, of course the same old money issues that seemed to have been around for years and years; certainly gets me thinking about having to make some changes.  I have always prided myself in having a good and positive attitude, but there has been plenty of times  where this statement has become something that I have focused on, but now I know how I need to continue doing it a lot more.

Leave it to Les Brown to keep me focused on things I know I have to do.  That's why I always promote that you find those sources of great and inspiring information that can help you get through difficult things in life. Remember, we are what we think.  Keep guarding your attitude along with what goes into your head. Find things that Les and others share on a daily basis to help you get through the ups and downs that life throws at us.  Any thoughts?  Any stories or examples to share?  You are always welcome and encouraged to just that by leaving some comments.

Life Is Hard - But Compared To What?  Quote of the Week....

8/11/2014

"When I hear somebody sigh, 'Life is hard,' I am always tempted to ask, 'Compared to what?" -- Sydney J. Harris

I’ve had my share of time to think lately on how hard life is while recovering from my knee surgery.  I must say however that I am working very hard to not let those thoughts consume me as it really only makes me feel sad and down.  When I saw this statement, it obviously connected with me.  So many times before I did not have the time to think about things as I was always busy doing many things, especially being a teacher and having a family with my wife and two teenagers.  I guess having a few extra weeks of having to take it easy, having a little pain and more discomfort; really gave me time to think about how challenging things are for me.

Here is where the second part of this quote comes into play.  I do need to look at this part and I have asked myself that question, compared to what?  Compared to when I was in college? Sure, it’s more challenging now for sure.  Compared to what so many other people around the world are going through and many even around here in my community, not a chance. I still have it really good compared to so many other people.  There is a saying that I have posted in my classroom that I make reference to all the time.  Be kind to others for everyone is fighting some type of battle.  The more I talk with people the more I see we all have some types of issues that we have to deal with.

So when it comes down to it, at least for me, when I think about how difficult life can be I need to remember a few things.  First, we all have issues and if I were to put my issues on a piece of paper and then try and trade them with other people for their issues, I think I would quickly see that mine are not that bad.  Second, a good life just doesn’t happen.  There has to be some type of work involved and most of the time it won’t be easy as I’ve come to learn things that are worthwhile are usually not easy.  Third, I’m really trying to take these temporary challenges and learn from them.  I am looking to see how they can help me get better as a person, father, husband, teacher, etc.  Finally, I think that how hard life can be is really up to me and my attitude towards things.  I can make those times as hard and as difficult as I make them out to be.  So maybe take a lesson and think about that quote a little bit now and don’t wait until you are laid up with some injury or illness where you have more time to dwell on how bad you might have it.  Always remember to ask yourself compared to what?

I’m always looking to learn from you and your thoughts on this quote.  Leave a comment or two or get back in touch with me so we can share some stories and ideas about this.
