With the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. day yesterday, I got to thinking about what he has meant to the world and why we still take the time to celebrate the man and what he stood for. I took some time to reflect on Monday about this and I found many great quotes I could attribute to him. This one stood out to me right away.
One of the first things that came to mind was that he said 'hate is too great a burden to bear'. I have found that to be so true. Even when I catch myself getting all worked up over something and I mutter to myself "God, I hate this", the feelings that rush over me at the time are not positive at all. In fact those feelings I'm beginning to recognize now are very negative, they hurt, they are painful and I've started to figure out a way to laugh at them when I think that way. What I'm really trying to do is to not think or respond that way at all. Slowly but surely, I'm getting better with this. Hating other people is another real big waste of time. Remember, if we have hate for others - that hate resonates in ourselves, our thinking, our actions, our words, our facial expressions, etc. It truly ends up hurting ourselves way more than it will hurt the other person.
One thing I think would be great for all of us to work on - focus on love. The love we have for the important people in our lives. The love that we should be after in how we spend our time in life - meaning, chasing after the passions that we want to spend our time working on. There is also the way we should love ourselves too, since we have to be with ourselves 24-7, it's a full time job to be with ourselves that much. So like Dr. King said - decide to stick with love. Life can be so difficult sometimes, why decide to add hate to the mix all the time to make things worse? How do you view Dr. King's message?
